ÒHe
moved with his parents from Maryland to North Carolina around 1720 with the
opening of the King's Highway, a cleared route that ran between Maryland to New
Jersey. Suitable as a wagon road in good weather, travelers could expect to
make 20-25 miles a day. It appears that he also made visits back to Maryland,
as he married Elizabeth SYMONS in Anne Arundel County, MD on 3 July 1726, when
he was 24 years old.
In
1748 John Carteret, the 2nd Earl of Granville, began to parcel out acreage to
settlers which he had from King George II of England. These were the first
privately owned properties in North Carolina. Residence within a year was a
requirement of ownership. In 1752 Orange County, North Carolina was designated.
William ALDRIDGE'S name appears on the first county tax list in 1755.

*Most
Alldredge/Aldridge/Aldrich/Allred researchers would like to know exactly who
the three Aldridge men were who signed this petition to colonial governor
William Tryon for redress of grievances, along with many other backwoodsmen
from this area. The names Nathan, James, and Nicholas Aldridge appear on the
Advertisement, but without any way to assign them to a particular farm,
property, or family. It is possible they were sons or other relatives of
William ALDRIDGE. The family was known to have militia service and
Revolutionary War veterans.

William Aldridge had a land grant (or deed) for 256 acres along a branch of
Sandy Creek, (in that part of Orange County that in 1779 became Randolph
County, NC), issued 1756. Source: "Aldridge Records" by F. R.
