Misc. Notes

The spelling "Malesky" is sometimes used by other relatives. (Malecki and Malecky also used in the family, and census reports have used Milliski, Meletzky and Malinak.)

Al Lehman provided a birth date for Anton of Dec. 1852, but www.maletsky.com/genealogy/ says December 27, 1859. I have tentatively entered the later date -- it matches with the ship manifest that reported age of 43 as of December 25, 1903. Census reports imply birth dates of 1865, 1868 and 1870 - - these have been ignored. (LFC).

www.maletsky.com/genealogy/

provides the following text (extracted Aug 2003):

Seems that the two older Malecki boys ( Josef & Anton) were fond of the Schwertner sisters. Josef married Helene Schwertner and supposedly Anton's 1st marriage was with Helene's sister whose name remains unknown. There is no record showing why Anton married the second time. Anton's second marriage was to Amelia Schwertner, who is also supposedly Helene's sister. So it seems that Anton married two Schwertner sisters.

Amelia died shortly after her third child, Aurelia "Laura". Anton then married again for the third time to Pauline Conrad on April 20, 1897. Anton and Pauline had three children. (Census data shows she had five.)

Bob writes, "Anton was the first of the Malecki brothers to come to America, which he did in 1902. Josef Malecki immigrated in 1907 with his whole family and they settled in Allentown, Pennsylvania. We do not know when or if Romuald immigrated, but Boleslav Maletsky (son of Romuald) does turn up in the Allentown city directory in 1914. By this time, all the families were using the spelling the officials at Ellis Island had given them - Maletsky".

Evan writes, "It appears that Anton came over here first in 1902, probably to size things up, with $14.00 to his name. He returned in 1903 with his family and $25.00, staying first with Pauline's sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Berthold Ewert in New York City."

The ship's register from the SS Patricia, which sailed from Hamburg, Germany on December 25, 1903 and arrived in New York at Ellis Island on January 11, 1904 shows Benjamin Maletsky to be 8 years, 4 months old. His younger brother Otto was 3 years, 6 months.

The ship's register spelled the last name as Malecki (Note: Not true, see below, register has ÒMaleckyÓ -- LFC). According to Bob the "c" in Polish is pronounced like a : "ts", hence the pronunciation was "Maletsky".

The Malecki family were very skilled weavers. Josef and Anton listed their occupation as weavers when they immigrated. Sebastian, the son of Josef was a silk-ribbon weaver all his working life.

Patterson, New Jersey (near Pompton Lakes) was one of America's main textile centers at the turn of the century. Allentown, PA was another. That is why the families settled there.

NOTES FROM ELLIS ISLAND RECORDS (extracted by LFC, August 2003):

I checked out www.ellisisland.org and found the family arrival record under the name ÒMaleckyÓ, with dates and ship per the above.

The Manifest says Òthis sheet is for steerage passengersÓ, and confirms they took passage on the Patricia, Departing Hamburg on 25 December 1903 and arriving in New York on January 11, 1904. Listed are Anton (age 43, occupation weaver), Pauline (age 24, wife) and 5 children. Anton and Pauline both report that they are able to read and write, that they have $25, their country of last permanent residence was Russia, that their race or people is ÒGermanÓ, and their last residence (Privince, City, or Town) was ÒTennyÓ. Passage was paid by self. Anton reported that he had previously been in the US Òfrom 1903 to 1903Ó, in Patterson, New Jersey. The family declared that they had not been in a prison or institution for treatment of the insane, they were not Polygamist or Anarchist, and were in good health. (In a separate statement the captain and the shipÕs doctor attest to their belief that this was all correct).

The childrenÕs names are variations on those we know, but similar. ÒEmmaÓ (whom we know as Irma) is a female, age 9; Benni (Benjamin) is a male, age 8; Wincency (this name doesnÕt correlate???) is a male, age 6; Otto is a male, age 3; Else (Elsie) is a female, age 11 months. (There should have been a daughter, Aurelia (Laura). She would have been 7, about the age of the puzzling male, so maybe the registrar got confused? See later note.)

The manifest writer has added an interesting note on PaulineÕs data line -- ÒDr. Says: PgtÓ – i.e., Pauline was pregnant (that would be with Arthur).

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTES FROM FRANK MALETSKY, 8/27/2003:

Frank notes that most of the family came in under the spelling ÒMaleckiÓ, rather than the ÒMaleckyÓ used for Anton. He mentioned AntonÕs brother, Josef, as an example.

(I checked Ellis Island records, and found that ÒJossef MaleckiÓ arrived on May 16, 1907, and that he declared his intent was to join his brother ÒAnton MaleckiÓ in New Jersey.  LFC – 8/27/03)

With regard to the ÒmysteryÓ child named ÒWincencyÓ above, Frank notes that LauraÕs grandmotherÕs name was ÒWincencya/VincenziaÓ. He guesses that this might have been used for LauraÕs middle name, and that Laura might have been called by her middle name. Sounds perfectly plausible to me – as one who is called ÒFredÓ but who has a first name of ÒLeoÓ. (Fred Coffey)

1910 CENSUS, PA, PASSAIC CO., PATTERSON 4TH  WARD:

Census taker has bad handwriting, the family got indexed as "Milliski", but they are all there. Anton is age 42, present marriage has been for 13 years. Anton is not yet a naturalized citizen. Pauline is 30, is mother of 8 children. All the children who arrived on the ship are there, although their names are hard to read. There have been three new children since arrival in America, with Arthur (age 6, born in NY), Mary (age 4, born in NY), and Erwin (age 6 months, born in NJ). Anton is a weaver in a silk mill, and is able to read. The two oldest children, Irma age 18 and Benjamin age 17, are also weavers in the silk mill. All three of them worked the full year of 1909.

Glancing over the census, it seems that nearly everyone in their neighborhood worked in the silk mill.

1920 CENSUS, PA, PASSAIC CO., POMPTON LAKES BOROUGH:

This time the census taker had very clear and precise handwriting - - and he clearly wrote down "Anthony Meletzky". Census taker also reversed the data on Otto versus Arthur, and this is corrected in the following:

They live on Romain Avenue, and they own their home and have a mortgage. Anton is age 50, Pauline is 39, and they are not yet naturalized citizens. Living at home are Otto (19), Elsie (17), Arthur (15) and Mary (13). Anton and the two oldest children all work in the silk mill. Anton is a Weaver, Otto is a Designer, and Elsie is a Warper.

The two youngest children were born in New York, but everybody else was born in Russia/Poland, and their mother tongue was German. Anton's father was born in Russia/Poland, his mother in Bremen Germany. Pauline's father was from Saxony Germany, and her mother from Russia/Poland.

The baby son, Erwin, listed in the 1910 census, is not there, indicating that he almost certainly died young.

1930 CENSUS, PA, PASSAIC CO., POMPTON LAKES DIST 170:

This census taker printed all his entries, but he still had problems. I would read the entry name as Anthony Malinski, but the census indexer took a shot on Ana Henry Malinak and his wife Paolina.

Anton is age 65, Pauline is 51, and they live at 33 Ramapo Ave., Pompton Lakes (just around the corner from where they lived in 1920). They own their home, worth $12,000, and they do not appear to own a radio. Interestingly, this time their mother tongue is listed as Polish, whereas it was German in the previous census! (I suspect the census taker just made an assumption, when he heard they came from Poland.) They do not yet appear to be U.S. citizens.

Living at the same address (#33) is daughter Mary, who has married Leonard Odez. Living next door (#31) is daughter Elsie, who has married Fredrick Bezold. (Not sure I got the last names right.) And also in Pompton Lakes we find son Otto Maletsky (they spelled his name right!). All the above males work in the silk mill, where Anton, Leonard and Fredrick are weavers, and Otto is a designer. Mary has no children and is an Operator in the Capworks industry, whatever that means. Elsie has a 6 year old daughter, Joyce.
