Misc. Notes

Most of the following information is taken from “The MAXEYS of Virginia: A Genealogical History of the Descendants of Edward and Susannah Maxey”, Third Edition, by Edythe Maxey Clark, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 2000.

“Elizabeth Maxey, a daughter of Edward Maxey, Sr., and Susannah (?Gates), had probably just married John Radford at about the same time he patented a 400-acre tract in Henrico County, Virginia, on 17 August 1725, next to the lands of her father and brother.”

“John also patented 175 acres in Amelia County, Virginia, on the south side of the Appomattox River and straddling Sandy’s Creek, on 20 August 1734. He added 100 acres to that tract and on 9 July 1737 the entire amount was repatented. On 18 March 1740 he sold 160 acres of this land... (several other land transactions are described).

“In 1743 John Radford was listed as a constable in the records of the court, and in later years he kept an Ordinary in his home, having been licensed to do so by the court in 1752 and 1754.”

“Elizabeth Radford was mentioned by her married name in the will of her mother in 1743, but the will of John Radford, written 29 July 1772 and proved 28 June 1773, referred only to ‘my loving wife’ without giving her name. He mentioned ‘all my children’ but named only sons Richard and George, daughter Susannah Epperson, and grandsons Richard and John Epperson. However the children of John and Elizabeth are well proved by a chancery suit filed in court in October 1830 by the children and grandchildren of John Radford, Jr., to force a division of the estate of their uncle George Radford. Besides Richard, George, Susannah and John Jr., the suit identified Agnes, Elizabeth, Nancy and Mary.”

Rosmary Shields, who has researched her Radford line for over 24 years, has never seen John with a middle initial in any of the deeds or court papers Virginia. His 29 Jul 1772 Cumberland Co. will was proved there 28 Jun 1773 (per Frank Davis Buckley's "chancery" document notes). Southam Parish was formed from St. James Parish in 1744. I have found no historical reference to Southane Parish outside of its place as the birth of John M. Radford in a few genealogy databases. John is named in his father's 1739 will.

The marriage place and date were found in a bible for the marriage of ELIZABETH Maxey and John Radford. Chamberland is the name of the person in whose house the ceremony was performed.

A couple sites claim that John Radford was first married to an older sister, Agnes Maxey, and that Agnes is the mother of the children - - no supporting documentation..

Also some claim her birth was about 1700, in London, England
