Giles Vermillion, sold himself into indenturement (temporary slavery) for passage to America from England where his family had escaped when Huguenot persecution became to much for them in France. Giles, a young boy of thirteen, had left his family in Wales and sailed from England some time in the year 1698. March 28, 1699 the Prince George County court held at Charles Towne, Maryland in the Eleventh year of the Reigne of our Sovereign Lord William the Third by the Grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland Defender of the Faith recorded that Giles Vemillion must serve according to law as a servant to James Green. It is assumed this was in payment for his passage from England to the Colonies. (See Court Records of Prince Georges County, Maryland, 1696-1699. Copy in Houston Clayton Library.)

The Vermillions were not native to England for it was believed three brothers migrated to the British Islands and most sources indicated they either came to Wales or Scotland. The name Vermillion is located in a French book labeled, Nobleman born 1495, Orleans , France. There is no doubt the Vermillions were French Huguenots forced to flee France during the 1500's maybe shortly after the St. Barthelemew's Day Massacre on August 24, 1572. It is said many thousands (10,000 to 20,000) of Huguenots were murdered by Catholic mobs all over France. England, being Protestant during those times, was an ideal haven. Giles married a Scottish Girl named Jane in 1708 and they had a least nine children of record - six sons; Giles, James, John, Thomas, William and Robert F. and three daughters; Martha, Jane and Jane # 2. Giles and Jane's family lived in Maryland and from there they spread to the neighboring colonies of Virginia, North Carolina and other areas.

Note: Piscattaway, or St. John's Parish, was in Prince George's County, Maryland. The original records are in the Hall of Records, Anapolis, Maryland; the Maryland Historical Society has an index to the original records: "Prince George's County, Maryland, Piscattaway or St. John's Parish ( now called King George's Parish), Index to register 1689-1878, compiled by Louise Joyner Hienton, carbon of a typewritten copy. The Maryland Historical Society also has a copy of the Vestry Proceedings, 1693-1775, with index. It seems that Giles Vermillion, being on the 1719 list, was likely older than James or John Vermillion, who appear with Giles on the 1773 list.

3. Title: Letter of Richard Vermillion

Author: Richard Vermillion

Text: In the library of Congress, Washington DC., there is a book titles "origin Des Familles", written by H.E. Dionne, M.D., who was a professor at the University of Laval. There are many French names in the book, and among them is the name "Vermillion", Nobleman, born 1495, Orleans France. There has been a story handed down in most Vermillion families that there were three brothers left France shortly after the St. Bartholemew's day Massacre, August 24, 1572. The Goverment of France, under French Roman Catholic control during the mid-1500's, fought the Huguenots bitterly. These three brothers were supposed to be members of this organization founded by a John Calvin. The Huguenots were so numerous that the Catholics feared they would take control of France. Catherine de Medica, the mother of King Charles IX, and other Roman Catholic leaders, plotted the death of the leading Huguenots. Charles ordered the murder of Gaspard de Celigany, who was the most respected of Huguenot leaders, and on August 24, 1572, this triggered Catholic mobs all over France, and thousands of Huguenots were murdered. It is believed these three brothers migrated to the British Islands, and most sources of information indicate they either went to Wales or Scotland. The first indication of the family in America is a Giles Vermillion who lived in Prince George's County Maryland in the early 1700's . It is told that Giles came to America and Married Jane ?, of Scottish descent. Later they were in southern Virginia, near Petersburg, where Giles, along with his son John Vermillion (1712), were engaged in the Iron Business.

Giles Vermillion, his wife Jane, and all their children except Robert F. are listed in "Colonial Settlers of Prince George's County Maryland" published 1998 by Elise Greenup Jourdan. Source was King George Parish Records (aka Piscataway Parish). Perhaps the records ended before Robert F. was born?

Robert Vermillion (1725-1779) is listed in "Revolutionary Patriots of George's County, 1775-1783", by Henry C. Peden Jr. (avail in Houston Clayton Library). He too the Oath of Allegiance in 1778.

1776 CENSUS: PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, ST. JOHN'S AND PRINCE GEORGE'S PARISHES:

Yes, there WAS a 1776 census in certain parts of the colonies, and the part for the above parishes is available in facsimilie in "Maryland Records: Colonial, Revolutionary, County and Church from Original Sources" by Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh, M.S., M.D., 1915. Some parts of this census are extremely detailed, giving the names and ages of every person in the household, including slaves!

The page that includes our Vermillion ancestors is less detailed than some, but still better than anything available elsewhere before 1850. Robert Vermilion and wife Elizabeth Vermilion are named. Their household includes males aged 51, 19, 16, 13 and 10, and females aged 47, 27 and 24 (surprising to see that the two oldest daughters are still living at home). And it includes one female slave, age 7.

The same census also includes two of Robert's brothers, Giles (1708-1776) and Thomas (1718 - ?).

The census date was August 31, 1776. The grand totals for the two parishes are as follows: 19 Free Blacks under age 16; 36 Free Blacks above 16; 885 white males between 16 and 50; 1380 white males under 16; 159 white males above age 50; 2562 white females; 1605 slaves above age 16; 1795 slaves under age 16. (Interesting observations: The population is 40% slave, and the median age for both whites and slaves is clearly under age 16.)

Prince George's County today is effectively an eastern suburb of Washington, DC. Only 27% of the population is under age 18, and it is 66% black. The population is about 800,000.

Misc. Notes

His full name may have been "Frances Burch Vermillion."

NOTES FROM LFC:

Alternative spelling may have been Vermilion

Most of this information on Birch Vermillion, and his descendants other than our direct family line (through Robert), was obtained from Nancy Granros (10250 SW 102 Terrace, Miami, FL 33176, Phone 305-274-4589) whom I met in the early 1980Õs through my Atari Computer Club and who turned out to be a distant cousin.  She is a descendant of Henderson Vermillion, one of Birch's sons, through his marriage to Dorothy French.

There are some spelling differences between her records an mine, i.e. Vermillion vs. Vermilion; and McGlasson vs. McGlauson

She has more information on the descendants of William, Cornelious, Joel and partiicularly Henderson.

http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/md/princegeorge/wills/harris-j.txt has the text of a will written by a John Harris, Sr., Prince Georges County Maryland, September 2, 1775, which is witnessed by Robert Vermillion and Burch Vermillion.

1820 CENSUS, KENTUCKY, MERCER COUNTY:

Burch Vermillion is found, with spouse of right age. Children are confusing. Living nearby are his known sons Joshia, Nickademus, and Henderson - - suggesting this is clearly the correct Burch Vermillion.

1830 CENSUS, KENTUCKY, MERCER CO:

Burch is not listed, but he would be about age 70 and quite possibly living with one of his sons. Living in the county are sons Josiah, Nicholas, Henderson, Joel, and William. Joshia, who lives near Nick, has two older people in his household who would be about the right ages to be Burch and his wife. Henderson, William and Joel also live near each other, but have no older family members.

Misc. Notes

Only indication of origin from Illa Coffey records is "A Welsh woman", and gives the name of Nancy GRIFFITH.

ANCESTRY.COM, VERMILLION AND ALLIED FAMILIES OF SW VIRIGNIA:

has note ÒNancyÕs first husband was a GriffithÓ. It then gives more plausible birth details, which I have used for this entry.  Other sources have same info, one says ÒNancy's maiden name was Lambert. She married a man named Griffith then became a widow. Nancy Griffith was Welch.Ó

The same source, however, suggests Burch was married a second time to Ann Wood. And marriage records for Prince George's County do indeed show that Francis Burch Vermillion married Ann Wood 30 Oct 1780   I see also that Tim Peterman indicates Francis Birch VermillionÕs wife was ÒAnn (?) WilliamsÓ. Obviously some questions here!

Misc. Notes

NOTE FROM LFC:

Data on parents was listed as "unproven" in information from my source, Illa Coffey.  However I subsequently obtained information from the descendents of one of his brothers (see notes in father's file), and everything ties together well enough to offer greater confidence in the data.

The 1820 census shows a Robert Vermillion living in Cumberland Co., KY, Creelsborough Twp. Family of 5 males and 3 females. Age and sex distribution is close to what I would expect, but not perfect. There is one female that is too old, could be another relative living with them? Children are 4 males and 1 female, which doesnÕt exactly match. However our basic data on the children is questionable, so I think it likely this is the correct family.

The 1840 census for Russell Co., KY, shows a Robert Vermilion (sic) of the right age. There is also another male of the same age, maybe a brother. And a male the age of son George. And a wife of the correct age. And 4 young females (three daughters and a wife of George?). And one older female, perhaps a mother of Robert or wife Nancy?

(George is also found in the 1850 census, same county, and married. Living with them is ÒJane CunninghamÓ, age 92 - probably his great aunt?)

See notes with his son-in-law Newton Eli Coffey for additional information.
