NameThomas TURNER
Birthabt 1841, Ireland
Death12 Nov 1900, Boston, Massachusetts
Misc. Notes
CAUTION: Both Thomas and Bridget were very inconsistent on reporting birth dates for the census, giving dates from 1839 to 1845. I have used dates from their earliest found record (their marriage), assuming young people are less likely to lose track! But I have doubts they really knew! They’re also not good at being consistent on immigration date.

1868 MARRIAGE:
Their marriage date was 12 Jul 1868, in Boston, with Thomas giving his age as 27 (born about 1841) and Bridget Ryan saying age 25 (born about 1843). At the time of their marriage, Thomas was living in Brookline, and Bridget living in Boston. His parents were given as Michael and Joanna, and hers were John and Bridget.

1869 BIRTH OF DAUGHTER MARY A:
The 1870 census (below) says they had a daughter Mary, age 1, suggesting birth in 1869. I found no birth certificate transcript, but I did find a death recorded for 18 Apr 1888, address 94 Marcella St, Boston, with all the proper names. But this leaves a problem “where was Mary in the 1880 census?” I don’t have an answer.

1870 CENSUS, BROOKLINE, NORFOLK, MA: Thomas Turner, laborer, age 29, and Bridget Turner, age 29 are present. With them is daughter Mary H, age 1. Also present is Nora Mitchell, born Ireland, with no occupation. (Nora is the right age to be Bridget’s mother, but that would not be consistent with the marriage (above).)

1870 BIRTH OF SON WILLIAM:
Found William’s birth record for 26 July 1870. The family was living in Brookline.

1872 BIRTH OF DAUGHTER ELIZABETH JANE:
Birth record dated 9 Nov 1871.

1874 NATURALIZATION OF THOMAS:
Not 100% sure this is right person, but it fits. Massachusetts naturalization record, dated 31 Oct 1874, for Thomas Turner, born Dec 1841 in Ireland.

1875 BIRTH OF DAUGHTER ANNIE:
Born 4 Mar 1875. Father Thomas is a porter, and mother uses name “Adelia”

1877 BIRTH OF SON THOMAS HENRY:
Birth record says born 18 Mar 1877 in Boston. The family lives at 1721 Fremont, and father Thomas is a porter.

1879 BIRTH OF DAUGHTER HONORA:
Birth record says 19 Apr 1879 in Boston, family address is 2 Downer St. Father Thomas is a porter, and mother name is “Bedelia”.

1880 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA: Thomas is age 35, born in Ireland, working in the Porter Paper Store. Wife is Delia, age 35. (Only time she used this name, but the combination of children leaves no doubt this is the right family.) At home are children William J (11), Elisabeth J (8), Anna (5), Thomas (3), and Hanora (1).

1881 BIRTH OF DAUGHTER MARGARET:
Birth record for 16 Jun 1881, Boston, Kimball St. Occupation of father Thomas is “porter”.

1889 DEATH OF DAUGHTER ELIZABETH JANE:
I found a death notice for 28 Feb 1889. It said "Elizabeth J. Coburn, maiden name Turner, age 17 years 3 months, HOMICIDE BY PISTOL SHOT WOUNDS NECK & HEAD, lived at 253 Highland (Roxbury), born in Brookline to parents Thomas & Bridget". (There is an article in the “Fitchburg Sentinel”, available online, for March 1, 1889, with a followup on March 2. This was apparently a murder/suicide involving her husband, Edward Coburn.)

1890 CENSUS: (Destroyed by fire.)

1900 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA: Thomas reports age as 60, birth Dec 1839 in Ireland, and working in a poster store. Bridget also says age 60, birth Dec 1839 in Ireland. They report immigration in 1863 and marriage in 1868, and say they’ve had 8 children, 5 still living. Son William age 28, born Jul 1870, has been unemployed for 12 months. Son Thomas born Mar 1877, is a Milk Man. Margaret is 18, born Jun 1881, and is a Shoe Stitcher.

1900 DEATH OF THOMAS:
Mass Death Record found. Thomas Turner, born about 1845, died 12 Nov 1900 in Boston of apoplexy. His occupation was “porter”. His parents were Michael Turner and Johanna Keeffe.
