Gladys Moretz Coffey

Boone - Mrs. Mary Gladys Moretz Coffey, 90, of 1363 Big Hill Road, Boone, wife of the late H.L. Coffey, died Tuesday night, Oct. 25, 2005, at home.

She was born Sept. 23, 1915, in the Big Hill community of Watauga County, to the late Herbert Cleveland and Pearl Carpenter Moretz.

Mrs. Coffey was a homemaker and made hand-tied canopies for many years, a skill she learned from her mother. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and the church altar guild for many years. Mrs. Coffey took great pride in being the older sister to her six younger brothers.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Coffey of Boone; two sons, Jon Coffey and wife, Aubrey, of Winston-Salem and Leroy Coffey and wife, Angela, of Concord; one granddaughter, Vickie Coffey of Lexington; two grandsons, Michael Coffey and wife, Melissa, of Wilkesboro and Andrew Coffey of Chapel Hill; three brothers, H.C. Moretz, Jr. and wife, Phyllis; Willis Moretz and wife, Pearl, and John W. Moretz and wife, Barbara, all of Boone; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Betty S. Moretz of Boone. She is also survived by seven nieces and 12 nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, George Moretz, Clayton Moretz and Roy Moretz; a step-grandson, Donald Dowell, Sr., and a step-great-grandson, Donald Dowell, Jr.

Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at Bethany Lutheran Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 9-10 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Tom Hehenberger. Burial will follow in the Old Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening (Friday) from 6:30-8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the Coffey residence.

COFFEY BOONE - Mary Ann Coffey September 13, 1951 - June 18, 2009 Mary Ann Coffey, age 57, of 1363 Big Hill Road, Boone, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Watauga Medical Center. Miss Coffey was born September 13, 1951 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late H.L. and Gladys Moretz Coffey. She was a counselor for Crossroads Counseling Center in Hickory and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. Miss Coffey is survived by two brothers, Jon Coffey and wife Aubrey of Winston-Salem, and Leroy Coffey and wife, Angela of Concord; one niece, Vickie Riley and husband, Paul of Lexington; two nephews, Michael Coffey and wife, Melissa of Wilkesboro, and Andrew Coffey of Durham; one great-nephew, Peyton Coffey of Wilkesboro; two uncles, H.C. Moretz, Jr. and wife, Phyllis of Boone, and John W. Moretz and wife, Barbara of Boone; and two aunts, Pearl Moretz of Boone, and Betty S. Moretz of Boone. She is also survived by a number of cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a number of aunts and uncles. A Celebration of the Life of Mary Ann Coffey will be conducted Sunday, June 21, 2009, at 3:30 p.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church. The body will lie in state at the Church, from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Harwood Smith, Pastor Tom Hehenberger and Pastor John Bollinger. Burial will follow in Old Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., at Hampton Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church World Hunger Fund or the Bethany Lutheran Church Music Program, c/o Bethany Lutheran Church, 1030 Big Hill Road, Boone, NC 28607.
