Mr. Max R. Moody, age 87, of 147 Garden Street, Blowing Rock, died Friday morning, March 31, 2006 at Blowing Rock Hospital.

Mr. Moody was born March 25, 1919 in Watauga County, a son of the late Benjamin and Maude White Moody. He was owner and operator of Moody’s Furniture in Blowing Rock for sixty years, having continued the business following the death of his father. Both were considered master craftsmen in the art of furniture building and today their pieces are found and prized by collectors all over the world.

Mr. Moody was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army. He was a Journeyman Electrician who was instrumental in wiring the nuclear plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Boone.

He was a member of the Blowing Rock Fire Department, serving for 32 years before his retirement.

Mr. Moody is survived by his wife, Jewell Coffey Moody, of the home; one son, Larry Max Moody and good friend, Judy Hodges, both of Blowing Rock; four sisters-in-law, Irene Woods of Lenoir, Helen Carroll of Boone, Marie Broyhill and husband Ralph, and Betty Coffey, all of Blowing Rock; three brothers-in-law, Homer Coffey and wife Ersel, and Wade Coffey, all of Boone, and Wayne Coffey of Blowing Rock.

A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, both of whom were among the pioneer families of Blowing Rock, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kristi Hope Moody; one sister, Edna Moody Collins; one sister-in-law, Thelma Deal, and one brother-in-law, Owen Coffey.

Funeral services for Mr. Moody were conducted on Sunday afternoon, April 2 at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone. Officiating was Pastor Tim Smith and Vicar Matt Simpkins. Military graveside rites and interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.
