K. U. Student and Wife Revealed Marriage Last Night

Suitors for the hand of Miss Margarite Burger who is employed by her brother, Carl Crawford, in his grocery store, Twelfth Street and Grandview Avenue, Kansas side, have been wondering four years ago why she paid so little heed to their attentions.

Last night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Coffey, 611 Northrup Avenue, Kansas side, they found out.

Frank Coffey, 24 years old, who completed his fourth year in the Kansas University medical school this year, came home. With him when he entered his parents' home was Miss Burger. A party of friends were waiting to surprise him. But they received the surprise when Coffee [sic] announced he and Miss Burger had been married four years. They were married in Olathe July 31, 1912.

Mrs. Coffey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Burger, Goodson, Mo. She is 22 years old. Coffey will return to Kansas University where he will finish the two years of his 6-year medical course. They37196 lived with his parents in Wyandotte Co., KS on 26 January 1920. They appeared in the census on 14 April 1930 in Jackson Co., MO.37197 Marguerite Hanning Burger, daughter of Aaron Burger and Mary Anne McLaughlin, was born on 4 July 1893 in Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO. Marguerite died on 4 January 1984 at the age of 90 in Hays, Ellis Co., KS and was buried at Mount Allen Cemetery in Hays, Ellis Co., KS.37198

In Memoriam - Roy B. Coffey

Dr. Roy B. Coffey, M.D., 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004, at his home.

He was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo. He was the son of Francis and Marguerite Burger Coffey.

Dr. Coffey served in the U.S. Air Force and earned the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a graduate of New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., University of Kansas and University of Kansas School of Medicine.

During his service in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Coffey attended Brooke Army Medical Center at Maxwell Air Force Base, Duke University in Durham, N.C., Nouasseur Air Force Base in French Morocco, where he was chief of orthopaedic surgery and chief of professional services 7280th USAF Hospital, orthopaedic consultant for the U.S. Embassy Portugal at Lisbon and orthopaedic consultant at Schilling Air Force Base.

After his time with the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Coffey was an attending orthopaedic surgeon at Asbury Hospital, Salina, Kan., and St. John's Hospital. Thirty years later, he retired from private practice and moved to Port Charlotte in 1985.

Dr. Coffey and his wife Louise were owners of Coffey House Bed and Breakfast in Port Charlotte. He was a Fellow Emeritus of American Academy of Orthopaedics Surgeons, Fellow and past president of International College of Surgeons. He was a member of Piedmont Orthopedics Society Duke University, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club, Charlotte Harbor, Fla., Military Officers Association of America Charlotte Harbor Chapter. He was also a member of American Legion Post 103 and Elk's Lodge 2606, both of Punta Gorda, Fla.

Dr. Coffey is survived by his wife, Louise Coffey of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Diane Sullivan of Salina, Kan. and Gail Kelling of Springfield, Mo.; four sons, Frank and Charles Coffey, both of Colorado, Lee Phillips of Port Charlotte and Gary Phillips of Missouri; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Joanne Ramph of Kansas.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2004, followed by the service at 1 p.m. at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda.

Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. with Military Honors provided by the MacDill Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Arrangements are by Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda.
