"A jury of 11 men and one woman was asked in Guilford Superior Court this afternoon to decide whether a Greensboro physician is the father of an illegitimate child.

"The case charging Dr. Robert T. Coffey of 231 N. Spring St., with the paternity of a child born out of wedlock went to the jury early this afternoon, completing a day and a half of trial.

"The defense today offered several witnesses in an effort to show the character of the prosecuting witnessee, Mrs. Joyce Angle Aydellette, was 'bad.'

"One of the defense witnesses, a 26-year-old student at Guilford College, Marion Preddy, testified he had had sex relations with Mrs. Aydellette 'many times' while she was a student in high school.

"Other defense witnesses testified the character and reputation of Dr. Coffey was 'good.'

"Dr. Coffey himself said on the witness stand yesterday he had had sexual relations with a 'number of women,' so many, he told the court, he could not remember their names.

"Conflicting testimony was offered as the case began yesterday, with Dr. Coffey, a bachelor, pleading innocent.

"Mrs. Aydellette, 22-year-old divorcee, said Dr. Coffey, a general practitioner, was the father of a baby born to her Feb. 28.

"Dr. Coffey denied paternity from the witness stand.

"Mrs. Aydellette, short, brown haired mother of two other children, told the court she had relations with Dr. Coffey on numerous occasions - in his office, in an apartment here and in a motel at Havelock.

"Dr. Coffey said he had relations with Mrs. Aydellette, whom he dated over a period of two years, only twice - once in April, 1957, in an apartment here and again in August, 1957, in a motel while the two were on the way to Morehead City. On both occasions, he said he tood measures to prevent conception. Mrs. Aydellette contended the child was conceived in June.

"Dr., Coffey appealed to Superior Court from a Domestic Relations Court verdict of guilty of bastardy and an active prison term of six months - the maximum sentence."
