Born in Cabarrus County, he was son of the late Grover A. and Sally Moore Coffey. He was a retired owner and operator of the Medical Center Barber Shop. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran in World War II, Pacific Theater on the U.S.S. Vicksburg and the U.S.S. Yorktown, and in the Korean Conflict.

He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 63, a church Councilman At Messiah Lutheran Church and a member of the adult Sunday School Class.
He was married to Nell Edsell Coffey and had a daughter, Mrs. Susan Coffey Holland of Kannapolis; A son, Jeffrey Coffey of the home; a brother, Howard Eugene Coffey of Concord, and a grandchild.

Miriam Nell Coffey age 84, of Burlington, NC passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at her home. The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord on Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 12pm until 2pm. The funeral service will follow at 2pm in the Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Stephen Rust. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park Cemetery, Kannapolis. Ms. Coffey was born in Cabarrus County on June 2, 1927 to the late Roy Lee and Blanche Cress Edsell. She was also preceded in death by her husband William Starling Coffey, brother, Robert Edsell and sisters, Madge E. Goodnight and Helen E. McClamrock. Ms. Coffey is survived by: daughter, Susan Coffey Holland of Auburn, WA; son, Jeffrey Lee Coffey of Burlington; sisters, Hilda Petty of Kannapolis and Jo Carolyn Mauldin of Concord; and granddaughter, Stephanie Lynn Florence of Greensboro. Ms. Coffey was employed as a financial officer for Foust Oil Company in Mebane, NC. She was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church in Burlington, NC. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance and Caswell County 914 Chapel Hill Road Burlington, NC 27215. Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Coffey family.
