Joe R. Hayes

Mr. Joseph Ransom Hayes, 92, of 1171 George Hayes Road, Boone, died Sunday night, Feb. 13, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital.

He was born Sept. 10, 1912, in Boone, Watauga County, to the late George Hamilton and Rosa Ethel Coffey Hayes.

Mr. Hayes was a retired self-employed carpenter and farmer. He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church where he served as song leader for many years. He also sang lead with the former Mount Vernon Quartet, which aired on radio station WATA during the 1950’s.

Survivors include his wife, Harlena Cook Hayes; two daughters, Evelyn Critcher and husband, C.M., of Boone and Ms. Joyce Meeks of Clermont, Fla.; two sons, Howard D. Hayes and wife, Lucy, and J. Harold Hayes, all of Boone; one sister, Mrs. Julia Hicks of Anderson, S.C.; two brothers, Bill Hayes and wife, Mary, of Glen Alpine and Howell Hayes and wife, Jean; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Betty Hayes, all of Boone. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Texie Cook, Mrs. Doris VanDyke and Mrs. Nannie Cook; and five brothers, Roby Hayes, Tom Hayes, Orris Hayes, Don Hayes and Glenn “Buck” Hayes.

Services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Dana Williams, the Rev. Burl Greer and the Rev. Bud Russell. Burial will follow in the Coffey Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening (Wednesday) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the Hayes residence, 1171 George Hayes Road, Boone.

Mrs. Harlena Cook Hayes

Mrs. Harlena Cook Hayes, 91, of 1171 George Hayes Road, Boone, died Tuesday afternoon, June 13, 2006, at Blowing Rock Hospital.

She was born March 18, 1915 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Rev. Will Jordan and Mollie Vandyke Cook.

Mrs. Hayes was a retired salesperson for Belk Department Store and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Critcher and husband, C.M., of Boone, and Joyce Meeks of Clermont, Fla.; two sons, Howard Hayes and wife, Lucy, and J. Harold Hayes, all of Boone; and a brother, George Cook and wife, Virginia, of Beverly, Ohio. Seventeen grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hayes; one brother, Dayton Cook; and one sister-in-law, Texie Hayes Cook.

Services will be conducted Saturday morning, June 17, 2006, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Bud Russell, the Rev. Burl Greer, and the Rev. Gary Shew. Burial will follow in the Coffey Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 7:00 until 8:30, at the funeral home.
