KIMBALL - Howard Clinton Coffey, 81, of Kimball, was dead on arrival Monday at a Welch hospital.

Born at Coalwood, he was a son of the late Daniel and Belle Bunn Coffey. He had been a resident of McDowell County most of his life and was a retired coal miner. He was a member of the UMWA and worked at the Hemphill and Mary Town Mines. He also was a member of the Trinity Temple Church at Welch. He was preceded in death by three sons, Buford Coffey, Kenneth Coffey and Larry Douglas Coffey; one daughter, Claudia Sue Coffey, and two brothers, James Coffey and Clarence Coffey.

Survivors: wife, Mary Scott Coffey; sons, Arnold Coffey of Bluefield, Manuel Coffey Sr., of Bluefield, Va., Woodrow Coffey of Duke, Okla., Jerry Coffey and Clifton Coffey, both of Fairfax, Va.; Darrell Coffey of Haymarket, Va., and Harold Coffey of Kimball; daughters, Mrs. Paris (Barbara) Belcher of Welch and Mrs. Brent (Charlotte) Legg of Charlottesville, Va.; brothers, Albert (Buck) Coffey of Charleston and Daniel Coffey of Clayton, N.C.; sister, Mrs. Dave (Hazel) Maxwell and Mrs. Blaine (Marie) Jackson, both of Johnson City, Tenn., Mrs. Paul (Effie) Beaman of Knotts Island, N.C., and Mrs. Tom (Bessie) Reed of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Temple Church at Welch with the Rev. Ralph Smith and the Rev. Larry Roberts officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Bluefield-Princeton Road.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Fanning Funeral Home in Welch and one hour prior to service Thursday at the church.
