Retired Army Maj. Ulysses M. Coffey, 83, Leavenworth, died Oct. 5, 1991, at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth. He was born in America City, Kan., and had lived in Leavenworth since the late 1950s. Maj. Coffey served in Army active duty for 18 years and in the Army Reserve for four years; he retired in 1957.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Leavenworth. He was a member of the Hancock Masonic Lodge, Fort Leavenworth, and the Scottish Rite bodies and was a past member of Abdallah Shrine. He attended the University of Kansas and the Officer Candidates School at Fort Riley, Kan.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. Coffey of the home; a daughter, Jean Sue Burnham, Council Bluffs, Iowa; two brothers, Robert D. Coffey, Mesa, Ariz., and James G. Coffey, Sunrise Beach, Mo.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandsons.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Belden Chapel, Leavenworth; military graveside services will be at Armstrong Cemetery, Rushville, Mo. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel, where Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association.

Maj. Ulysses Coffey and Ruth M. Smith were married. Ruth M. Smith, daughter of James J. Smith and Charity Lay, was born on 6 March 1908. Ruth died on 13 November 1995 and was buried at Armstrong Cemetery in Rushville, Buchanan Co., MO in November 1995 .25045
