She was born Apr. 11, 1922, in the Coffey's Gap community of Watauga County, to the late William H. and Nila Rowe Coffey. Mrs. Byrd was a homemaker and a member of Clark's Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, George W. Byrd; two daughters, Margaret Tester and husband, Tom of Zionville and Mildred Byrd and husband, Ronnie Greene, of Blowing Rock; one son, Joe Byrd and wife, Rose of Kingsport, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Jackie Lawrence and Husband, James, of Zionville, Donna Green and husband, Johnny, of Blowing Rock and Amy Byrd of Cookville, Tenn.; two grandsons, Mark Hodges and wife Robin, of Trinidad, West Indes and Chris Byrd of Hudson; two sisters, Reba Townsend and husband Mack, of Valle Crucis and Mrs. Gertrude Isaacs of Banner Elk; one brother, Truitt Coffey and wife, Joyce of Mountain City, Tenn. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a special friend, Gary Blevins, of Zionville. She was preceded in death by a son, Bynum Dale Byrd and a brother, Bynum Coffey. Services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Clark's Creek Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Mike Townsend and the Rev. Bill Warren. Burial followed in Clark's Creek Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, N.C. 28607 or to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Youth Fund, 1564 Silverstone Road, Zionville, N.C. 28698. Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Elsie Lucille Coffey and George Washington Byrd Jr. were married on 13 September 1940 in Johnson Co., TN.45125 George Washington Byrd Jr. was born on 7 July 1921 in North Carolina.
