Bertha Smith Haley, 89, of Vero Beach, died June 8, 2002, in Indianapolis, Ind.

She was born April 13, 1913, in Seymour, Ind., and moved to Vero Beach 24 years ago, from Indianapolis.

She was a school teacher at Brownstown Elementary School in Brownstown; Bluff Avenue Grade School, in Indianapolis; Southport Junior High and Southport High School, both in Southport; Vero Beach Elementary; and also other schools in Okeechobee and Fort Walton Beach for 52 years, prior to retirement.

She was a member of Indiana Teachers Association, Florida Teachers Association and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a member of Cortland Methodist Church in Cortland, Ind.

Surviving are one son, James F. Haley, of Indianapolis; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Ebanks, of the Cayman Islands; one sister, Leona Mae Mathiak, of Vero Beach; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home in Indianapolis, where a funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis.
