George Thomas Coffey

Mr. George Thomas Coffey, 89, of Laytown Road, Lenoir, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007.

He was born August 29, 1917 in Caldwell County, to the late Will and Bessie Townsend Coffey.

Mr. Coffey was a self-employed farmer and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include four sons, Ray Coffey of Banner Elk, Charles Coffey, Clarence Coffey and Donald Coffey, all of Lenoir; a daughter, Carrie Townsend of Lenoir; three brothers, John Coffey, Abe Coffey and Jack Coffey, all of Boone; a sister, Coralee Greer of Lenoir; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cordie Viola Coffey; three sisters, Ruth Coffey, Lula Church and Nancy Coffey; a brother, Joe Coffey; two grandsons, Paul Joseph Townsend and Jerry Wayne Coffey; and one great-grandson, Kenneth Townsend.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Laytown Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ed Greene. Interment followed at Laytown Baptist Church Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Billy Townsend, Chris Coffey, Will Coffey, Joel Coffey, William Coffey, Tony Hudson, and Corey Coffey.

Honorary pallbearer was Clint Coffey.

George Thomas "Pig Tom" Coffey and Cordelia Viola "Cordie" Coffey were married. Cordelia Viola "Cordie" Coffey, daughter of Thomas Newton Coffey and Ella Mae Loudermilk, was born on 13 August 1920 in Watauga Co., NC.35413 She lived with her parents in Globe Twp., Caldwell Co., NC on 15 April 1930. Cordelia died in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC on 6 January 1983 and was buried at Laytown Baptist Church Cemetery in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC in January 1983 .35414,35415,35416,35417

Carrie Marie Coffey Townsend, age 69, of Frank Townsend Place, Lenoir, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2019 at her residence.  She was born October 14, 1950 in Watauga County to the late Tom and Cordie Viola Coffey.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Paul Joseph “Little Joe” Townsend.

Mrs. Townsend was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.  She loved her Lord and was the greatest wife, mother, grandmother and sister ever.  She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening, her flowers and just being outside.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Junior Townsend of the home; one son, Billy Townsend and wife Connie of Lenoir; two daughters, Tammy Greene and husband Barry and Allie Moore and husband Mikie, all of Lenoir; four brothers, Ray Coffey and wife Ruby of Newland, NC and Charles Coffey and wife Phyllis, Bill Coffey and Donnie Coffey, all of Lenoir; eight grandchildren, Faith Holder, Matthew Hall, Joshua Hall, Abby Hall, Nathan Townsend, Justin Townsend, Kim Townsend and Samantha Quick; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Monday, December 30, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Frank Townsend Cemetery conducted by Pastor Hoss Moore. 

Serving as pallbearers will be family and grandchildren.
