He lived with his parents in Avery Co., NC on 2 April 1930. Dillard was arrested on 29 December 1936 and charged with murder.35426

Watauga Man Held For Fatal Shooting

Boone, Dec. 28.--(AP)--Dillard Coffey, 23, of Shulls Mill, surrendered to Sheriff Edmundson, of Watauga county, here this afternoon and was charged with murder in connection with the death of Raymond Dellinger, 41.

Sheriff Edmundson said Coffey confessed that he shot and killed Dellinger at Dellinger's home at Shulls Mill last night.

He made no statement as to why he did the shooting, the sheriff said. He lived in the residence of Austin Blaine Coffey in Boone, Watauga Co., NC on 28 April 1937.19858 He was sentenced in Watauga Co., NC to prison in September 1937 for 10 to 15 years for 2d degree murder. Watauga Man Freed After Serving Three Years.

Raleigy, May 29--(AP)--Dillard Coffey, sentenced in Watauga county in September, 1937, to 10 to 15 years for second degree murder, was paroled today by Governor Hoey. Dillard registered for the WW2 draft on 16 October 1940 in Globe Twp., Caldwell Co., NC.35429 Dillard died on 10 August 1988 at the age of 75 in Watauga Co., NC and was buried at White Springs Cemetery in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC.35430,35431,35432

Dillard Coffey is said to have shot and killed Raymond Dellinger, the son of Reuben and Rebecca Coffey Dellinger. The story goes that Dillard and Raymond quarreled over a woman. Raymond came to Dillard's home "looking for trouble." Dillard shot him and he fell just inside the door to the home.

The killing was determined to be "self defense" and Dillard never served time for the murder.
