Mrs. W.C. Townsend

Mrs. Virgie Edith McCroskey Townsend, 53, Route 7, Lenoir, died at 12:30 a.m. today in a local hospital after suffering a sudden attack at her residence.

Mrs. Townsend, wife of Wilburn Clarence Townsend, was born April 10, 1917, in Caldwell County, the daughter of the late Samuel Wiley and Sarah Elenore Wright McCroskey. She was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Robert B. (Frances) Rash of Lenoir; four sons, Wilburn E. Townsend of Lenoir, Ronnie Lee and Jerry Wilson Townsend of the home and James Robert Townsend, Route 1, Boomer; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Sam (Mae) Woodie, Route 2, Newland, Mrs. Floyd (Lula) Whisnant, Route 7, Lenoir, and Mrs. Mack (Esther) Coffey, Route 1, Blowing Rock.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boone Fork Baptist Church in Watauga County by the Rev. Dean Hodges, the Rev. Horace Harris and the Rev. Benny McDonald. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be taken from Greer-McPhaul Funeral Home to the residence at 11 a.m. Friday.

Ralph Dean Bennett was born on 28 April 1915 in Avery Co., NC. Ralph died in Big Stone Gap, Wise Co., VA on 8 September 1996 and was buried at Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap, Wise Co., VA in September 1996 .³⁶⁵⁹⁶

Wilburn C. Townsend

Green Valley Baptist Church member

Wilburn C. Townsend, 79, of Route 7, died Sunday in Caldwell Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Townsend was born Jan. 26, 1907 in Mitchell County to the late Ella Townsend. Retired from Broyhill Furniture where he was a trim saw operator. He was a member of the Green Valley Baptist church and was preceded in death by his wife, Edith M. Townsend; two sons, Thomas and Ralph Townsend, and a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Crisp.

Survivors include four sons, Wilburn Eugene Townsend, Jerry Wilson Townsend, and Ronnie Lee Townsend all of Lenoir, and James Robert Townsend of Banner; a daughter, Mrs. Francis T. Rash of Lenoir, and 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Boone's Fork Baptist Church with the Revs. Bristol and Berry McDonald officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Townsend's grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 at Greer-McElween Funeral Home.
