Mrs. Virginia G. Ward

Mrs. Virginia Gregg "Jackie" Ward, 74, of Shaire Center, Lenoir, and formerly of Asheville, N.C., died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Caldwell County Hospice in Lenoir.

She was born Dec. 1, 1924 in Blowing Rock, a daughter of J. Allen and Charlotte Dula Gregg.

Mrs. Ward was educated at Blowing Rock High School, Appalachian State University and Western Carolina University. She taught at Mt. Pleasant High School in Wilkes County and was Director of the Biltmore Methodist Weekday School in Asheville.

In 1945 she became Manager of the Folk Heritage Department at Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and was the producer and director of the nations oldest folk festival, the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival and of the Shindig-On-The-Green.

She had a lifetime of interest in all forms of heritage of the people of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. She specialized in preserving the music and dance of the area, having started researching and collected while still in college.

She formerly held membership in various educational associations and folk music societies. Mrs. Ward was a member of the Biltmore United Methodist Church in Asheville.

Survivors include her husband, Earl W. Ward of Shaire Center, Lenoir; two nieces, Barbara Price of Lenoir and Charlotte Summey of Hickory; and three nephews, Bill Gregg of Athens, Ga., Jeff Gregg of Tuskegee, Ala., and Richard Lamkin of Hickory.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Wanda Lamkin and a brother, Merrill Gregg.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Boone Fork Cemetery in Blowing Rock, officiated by Mr. Bill Gregg, the Rev. Ashley Stanley and the Rev. Richard Holshouser.

The family will greet friends following the graveside service at the Blue Ridge Advent Christian Church.

Austin & Barnes Funeral Home in Boone is in charge of the arrangements.

Virginia Katherine "Jackie" Gragg and Earl William Ward were married on 11 August 1946 in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC.36843 Earl William Ward, son of Miles A. Ward and Hester Elizabeth Trivett, was born on 8 November 1911 in Watauga Co., NC. Earl died on 24 September 2002 at the age of 90 in North Carolina and was buried at Boone Fork Community Cemetery in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC.36844,36845
