Mrs. Ella Coffey Luas

Chesterfield, April 14. - Special: Mrs. Ella Coffey Lucas, sixty-four, wife of Dr. Benjamin D. Lucas, died at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon after an illness of several months. She lived in Chesterfield since she returned seveal years ago from China where she served with her husband as a missionary for twenty years.

Since her return from China, Mrs. Lucas had taught in the schools of Chesterfield county. She is survived by her husband, B. D. Lucas and three children, B. D. Lucas, Jr. of Chesterfield; T. L. Lucas, interne at Roper hospital, Charleston and Vera Lucas, teacher in the Union school.

Funeral servies were held yesterday afternoon from the home, conducted by the pastor of the Methodist church, the Rev. Mr. Dunbar, Interment followed in the Chesterfield cemetery.

Lynchburg, VA., June 23. - Mr. and Mrs. Daniel R. Coffey, of Orinoco, Amherst county, have issued invitations to the wedding of their daughter, Miss Ella Rue Coffey, and Rev. Benjamin Dean Lucas, which will take place at Court-Street Methodist Church, in this city, at 10 A.M. Wednesday, July 8th.

As is well known to many, Miss Coffey has been a teacher of the Methodist Episcopal Missionary schools in China for the past eight years, and was located near Shanghai until last August, when she tool a vacation and returned to this country. The Lucas family arrived at Honolulu, Oahu, Hawii on 25 March 1910 aboard the ship Siberia from Shanghai, China. Benjamin applied for a US Passport at the US Legation on 3 April 1893 in Peking, China.27902 He lived with his parents in Chesterfield, Chesterfield Co., SC on 19 April 1910. He appeared in the census on 26 April 1940 in Chesterfield, Court House Twp., Chesterfield Co., SC.27903 Benjamin died on 12 March 1956 at the age of 87 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield Co., SC and was buried at Chesterfield City Cemetery in Chesterfield, Chesterfield Co., SC.27904

B. D. Lucas

Bennettsville, March 12 - Dr. B. D. Lucas, 87, died at 2 p.m., at his home following an illness of two months.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hursey Funeral Home at Chesterfield.

Dr. Lucas was twice married. His first wife Ella Coffey Lucas of Lynchburg, Va. died several years ago. From this marriate three children survive; Mrs. J. Williams of Charleston, Dr. T. L. Lucas of Alexandria, Va. and Ben D. Lucas of San Antonio, Texas.

Other survivors include his widow, Mrs. Irene Worley Lucas of Bennettsville; two brothers and a sister.

Dr. Lucas attended The Citadel and graduated in pharmacy from the College of Charleston.

In 1890 he went to China as medical missionary serving 15 yeas in that capacity.

He has served as pastor of several churches and a few years ago retired after serving both Beulah Charge and Blenheim Charge in Marlboro County.
