Hiter Raymond (Buck) Coffey

AMHERST-Hiter Raymond (Buck) Coffey, 93, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at Fairmont Crossing Nursing Home. He was the husband of Mary Clarke Coffey.

Born Sept. 25, 1911, at Alto, he was a son of the late Hiter Webster and Mary Higginbotham Coffey. He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church where he had served on the board of stewards and the finance committee, a former member of the Amherst Town Council, a former member of the American Legion Post 98, served as chairman of the Amherst County Draft Board during the Korean War, served on the Welfare Board, served five years of active duty in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific and was a retired outside plant manager for the First Colony Telephone Company in Amherst.

He is also survived by a daughter, Rebecca Coffey Neas of Midlothian; two sisters, Helen C. Keith of Agricolo and Hazel C. Humston of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Geoffrey Burnette Neas and wife, Robin of Mechanicsville and two great-grandchildren, Taylor B. Neas and Megan D. Neas.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2005, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with Dr. Timothy D. Hazlett officiating. Burial will follow in the Amherst Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 16 of Lynchburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Driskill Funeral Chapel.

Mary Douglas Clarke Coffey

AMHERST-Mary Douglas Clarke Coffey, 94, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 at Fairmont Crossing. She was the wife of the late Hiter Raymond Coffey for 59 years.

Born April 2, 1916 in Enfield, VA, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Joshua and Susie Ella Davenport Clarke. Mrs. Coffey was a graduate of New London Academy and attended Blackstone College. She was employed by the Amherst Telephone Company, the practice of Lyddane Miller, MD and served as Clerk of the Selective Service, Amherst County.

She was an active member of the Village Garden Club, the Amherst Woman's Club and a charter member of Winton Country Club. She served in many leadership roles at Emmanuel United Methodist Church including serving as organist for 25 years.

She is survived by a daughter Rebecca Coffey Neas of Midlothian, two grandchildren Geoffrey Burnette Neas and wife Robin of Mechanicsville and Susan Clarke Neas of Wanchese, NC, two great grandchildren Taylor Baines Neas and Megan Davenport Neas and a niece Susan Mawyer Sallwasswer of Williamsburg.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with Dr. Timothy D. Hazlett officiating. Burial will follow in the Amherst Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P. M. today at Driskill Funeral Chapel, Amherst 434-946-5529.
