Talmadge R. Coffey

Madison Heights - Talmadge Raymond Coffey, 84, of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances Crist Coffey.

Born in Amherst County, August 11, 1918, he was a son of the late Talmadge Ivy and Mary Lawhorne Coffey. He was retired from Advance Auto Parts.

Mr. Coffey was a U.S. Army Veteran and served during World War II and participated in the D-Day Normandy Invasion. He was a charter member of the Madison Heights Ruritan Club and was a member of Madison Heights Christian Church. He was also a lay minister for over 21 years and served the Mountain Top Christian Church in Love, Va. and Beach Grove Christian Church in Roseland.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Patsy Coffey Smith of Madison Heights; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Francis Ivy Coffey and John Daniel (J. D.) Coffey preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 21, from Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Land, the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton, and the Rev. Joe Nelson officiating. Interment followed in Fort Hill Memorial Park, with military honors by American Legion Post 16.

Talmadge Raymond Coffey and Ada Frances Crist were married. Ada Frances Crist, daughter of Walter Crist and Sarah , was born on 9 October 1923 in Amherst Co., VA. She lived with her parents in Amherst Courthouse Dist., Amherst Co., VA on 10 April 1930. Ada died on 14 December 2005 at the age of 82 in Amherst Co., VA and was buried at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA.30310

Frances Crist Coffey

Frances Crist Coffey, 82, of Madison Heights, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2005. She was the wife of the late Talmadge Raymond Coffey.

Born Oct. 9, 1923, in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Walter Scott and Sarah Coleman Crist. Mrs. Coffey was retired from Singer Company after more than 20 years of service as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Madison Heights Christian Church.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Emuel Crist, Mayo Crist and Linwood Crist; and two sisters, Carrie Purvis and Scottie Moss.

Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Smith and husband, Gilbert, of Madison Heights, a sister, Edna C. Wingfield, of Lynchburg; two sisters-in-law, Dot Coffey, of Madison Heights and Katrina Crist, of Richmond; four grandchildren, Gregory Smith, Lynette Jones and husband, Geoffrey, David Smith and Steven Smith, all of Madison Heights; nine loving and devoted great-grandchildren, that she loved and adored, Clay and Cameron Smith, Chase, Samantha and Mackenzie Davis, Natalie, Jillian, Naomi and Abigail Jones, and a longtime friend, Dale Hyden, other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bendall for the care and compassion given to Mrs. Coffey.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, by the Rev. Paul Land and the Rev. Jack Hamilton. Interment will take place in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
