Hazel Dawn Coffey Humston, 88, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 13, 2012. Born in Buena Vista, Va., on March 14, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Hiter Webster Coffey and Mary Fanny (Mamie) Coffey. She married Frank English Humston on September 17, 1945, and they were married for 56 years before his death on May 21, 2002. She was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church for more than 57 years and was a member of the Friendship Class at Raleigh Court. Hazel retired in 1990 after 26 years with Standard Register Company.

Nana, as her grandchildren called her, had a real knack for growing plants and was a great cook. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren looked forward to the many visits to Nana and Pop's with all their cousins for weekends and special occasions. Hazel's children and grandchildren have numerous stories and fond memories from trips to Nana and Pop's house.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Wallace Coffey, Wiley Coffey, Buck Coffey, Lyle Coffey, Hunter Coffey and an infant brother, Morris Coffey; and four sisters, Mildred Ray, Elsie Coffey, Ruby Davis and Janie Carr.

She is survived by three sons, Douglas E. Humston and his wife, Marie, of Montclair, Va., Donald W. Humston and his wife, Connie, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Dennis L. Humston and his wife, Lorna, of Bent Mountain, Va.; a sister, Helen Keith, of Monroe, Va.; five granddaughters, Christy M. Humston, of Charlottesville, Va., Cindy A. Humston, of Bristow, Va., Carolyn D. Vernon and her husband, Travis, of Montclair, Va., Mindy H. Clark and her husband, Chad, of Charlotte, N.C., and Amber L. Humston, of Roanoke, Va.; three grandsons, Samuel W. Humston, of Johnson City, Tenn., Joseph M. Humston and his wife, Elizabeth, of Johnson City, Tenn., and James D. Humston, of Nashville, Tenn.; one great-grandson, Austin B. Clark, of Charlotte, N.C.; two great-granddaughters, Sara M. Vernon and Kate V. Vernon, of Montclair, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2012. Celebration of Life services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church.
