Served in the US Navy.

Another source indicates that Ransom was in the regular army: Ransom fought on Union side during Civil War. A part of the U.S. Regular Army. Rank-Private. (film M233 roll 25). Possible 49th Kentucky Infantry. Ransom's father was a Confederate sympathizer. With the the exception of his uncle Austin's stepson Keith Blalock, Ransom was the only one in his family (including his uncles & his sisters' husbands) who fought for the Union side. This likely caused a conflict and possible estrangement.

Ransom "Rance" Coffey and Malinda A. Weaver were married.
