Edith Coffey Phillips, 76, of York, SC, formerly of Buena Vista, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at her home after an extended illness.

Born December 1, 1928, she was a native of Buena Vista and was the daughter of Walker Lee Coffey and Sarah Montgomery Coffey. She was the widow of Robert Douglas Phillips, Jr. and was preceded in death by her brother, Thurman Lee Coffey, Sr. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in York, SC and a member of the Ladies Bible Study Class. She was a graduate of Parry McCluer High School and Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, VA with a degree in Secretarial Science and Accounting. She was a retired employee of Dunlap-Johnson Chevrolet Co., Inc., York, SC. She and her late husband owned and operated Palmetto Custom Carpet, York, SC. After retirement she helped her daughter operate a licensed daycare in their home. The children called her “Grandmama”.

She is survived by two daughters and sons in laws, Lita and Doug English of Clayton, GA; Edie and Jeff West of York, SC; three granddaughters, Amy York Blackwell and her husband, Shane and Jolie York of Clayton, GA; Melissa West of York, SC; one great granddaughter, Brenley York; one step-granddaughter, Mandy English Howard and her husband, John of Clayton, GA; one step grandson, Justin C. English of Mountain City, GA; three sisters, Katherine Rogers and brother-in-law, Gordon of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Roxie Barksdale of Lynchburg; Betty Teague of Buena Vista and one sister-in-law, Normagene Coffey of Buena Vista; and a devoted brother-in-law, Robert Douglas of Big Island; and 14 beloved nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Green Hill Cemetery with Rev. David Bain officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alexa R. Good ALS Foundation, P. O. Box 12248, Rock Hill, SC 29731 or Hospice and Community Care, P. O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731. The Lomax Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Edith Marion Coffey and Robert Douglas Phillips Jr. were married on 20 November 1948 in Botetourt Co., VA.43678 Robert Douglas Phillips Jr., son of Robert Douglas Phillips and Lolita Deacon, was born on 5 April 1924 in Buena Vista, Independent City, VA. Robert died at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC on 2 May 1988 of pancreatic cancer and his remains were cremated.
