Richard Lee Coffey, Sr., 97, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2013. He was the husband of 64 years to the late Ruby Allen Coffey. Born April 9, 1916, in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Chester William Coffey and the late Ottie Mae Hamilton Coffey.

Richard was a charter member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. He was retired with 34 years service at Hemingway Trucking Company. Richard also was an Army Veteran who served in Panama, Ecuador, France and Germany during World War II. His favorite pastime was golf, and he enjoyed the distinction of shooting his age when he was 69. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Willie Lawrence Coffey and his sister, Nellie Coffey Crawford.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Mary Louise Coffey Wagner and her husband David Allen Wagner of Lynchburg; two sons, Richard L. Coffey, Jr. and his wife Margaret Kay Hicks Coffey of Jobstown, NJ and Christopher Allen Coffey and his girlfriend Kimberly Dawn White of Forest; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted, 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Becky Cloud officiating. 

The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence of Mary Wagner.

The family would like to extend deep appreciation for the tender loving care Richard received while residing at Runk and Pratt Assisted Living, The Elderly Place, and also Gentle Shepherd Hospice.

Richard Lee Coffey Sr. and Ruby Doris Allen were married on 10 January 1944 in Franklin, Southampton Co., VA.47898 Ruby Doris Allen, daughter of Harley B. Allen and Nannie Moorefield, was born in 1922. In January 1944 she was a teacher in Virginia. Ruby died in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA on 9 September 2008 and was buried at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA in September 2008 .47899,47900
