Injury Fatal To Wilkes Resident

North Wilkesboro, April 29--Richard Lee Bumgarner, 45, of Wilkesboro, died this afternoon in Wilkes General Hospital of an injury received in an altercation Sunday afternoon, it was learned from the office of Wilkes Sheriff Claude Billings, Jr.

Hoke Wiles, chief deputy sheriff, said Bumgarner received a spinal injury at the home of Shuba Queen three miles east of North Wilkesboro. The injury caused paralysis and proved fatal.

James Shew of Route 2, North Wilkesboro has been jailed in Wilkesboro and Ted Roberts of the Rock Creek community has been arrested at Whiteville and will be returned to Wilkesboro in connection with Bumgarner's death, Wilkes officers said.

According to reports given the officers, Bumgarner was struck with a chair during an altercation.

Bumgarner was born in Wilkes son of the late W. T. Bumgarner and Mrs. Rebecca Coffey Bumgarmer of Route 3, North Wilkesboro.

He is married to Miss Pansy Kilby who survives. Other survivors are two sons, Jerry and Jimmy Lee Bumgarner of the home; two daughters, Brenda Kaye and Toni Jo Bumgarner of the home; his mother and two sisters, Mrs. Glenn Bumgarner and Mrs. James Brookshire, all of Route 3, North Wilkesboro.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Edgewood Baptist Church by the Rev. Clyde Church and the Rev. Harvey White. The body will be taken home Wednesday four p.m. and will be viewed at the church thirty minutes before the services.

Richard Lee Bumgarner and Pansy Kilby were married on 20 June 1936 in Wilkes Co., NC.³⁰³⁸⁷ Pansy Kilby was born on 18 June 1919. Pansy died in Wilkes Co., NC on 31 January 1978 and was buried at Edgewood Baptist Church Cemetery in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., NC in February 1978 .^30388,30389
