Third Generation

12. John Coffey was born circa 1733 in Essex Co., VA.

John Coffey and Dorcas Carter34 were married.

"John is probably the son of John and Jane. He is reported to have had two wives; Dorcas Carter and Nancy Richardson. There is no documentation to positively identify his children, or whether he had children by both wives.

"He is mentioned in the Albemarle Co., VA deed books as John, Jun. from 1760 to 1765, and then in Amherst Co. in 1767.

"There are a number of John Coffey in Wilkes and Burke Counties in NC. It is likely that one of them is this John who entered land in 1779 on Blair's Ford of Lower Creek in Burke Co., next to Benjamin Coffey.

"It appears likely that John left NC for TN and is the John Coffey over 45 in the 1820 census of Grainger Co. This is made more likely by the fact that Meredith Coffey, the most likely of a son of John, went to Grainger Co. from Wilkes Co., by 1798, and was there until his death in 1838. Meredith married an Esther or Hester, and his children included a daughter Dorcas. That is a good indication that Meredith was a son of John and Dorcas Carter Coffey.

"Any other children listed for John and Dorcas are speculative at best. Some attributed to Edward Coffey and Grace Cleveland may in fact be children of John and Dorcas.

"However, Sally who married Benjamin Rhea and Jenny who married Levi Miller, both in Grainger Co. could be daughters of John and Dorcas. In both marriages, the bondsman was Meredith Coffey. Thomas Coffey, found in 1810 Grainger Co. census records might also be a son of John and Dorcas."
