Erma Laurine Richter Coffey "Rick" Erma Laurine Richter Coffey "Rick", 100, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, in Wytheville, Virginia. She was born in Spokane, Wash., on July 24, 1913. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Emma Richter; husband, Col. Walden B. Coffey; sisters, Lucille Bursch and Vernadine Hermann; and grandchildren, Laura Lee McKinney, Amelia Grace Coffey and Nathaniel Milton Coffey. She is survived by four children, Michael Coffey, Dillwyn, Va., Kate Preston, Union, N.J., Thomas Coffey, Wytheville, Va., and Susan McKinney, Palisade, Nebr.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Earlier in her life she and her husband, a career military officer, had lived in numerous places, Ohio, Alaska, California, South Carolina, New Mexico, Florida and Texas, and traveled extensively, including trips to Africa and Asia. Mrs. Coffey was a prize-winning poet at the state level in South Carolina and Virginia, and was known for her wide-ranging interests, intellectual curiosity, and abiding sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
