NEWTON Billy "Bill" Jackson Hewitt, 87, of Newton, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Abernethy Laurels, where he was a resident. Born January 20, 1929, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Ernest Edward Hewitt and Mary Edith Beard Hewitt (later Edwards). A graduate of Balls Creek High School, Bill married the love of his life, the former Dade Aldridge, on Dec. 23, 1949, in York, S.C. They were married for 47 years until Dade's death in 1997. He was also predeceased by his youngest son, Philip. Bill began working as a carpenter while he was still in high school and became well-known over the years as a custom home builder and the owner of Hewitt Construction, Inc. He built hundreds of high-quality homes, which he would happily point out all over the county for his family's entertainment. Bill enjoyed jokes and humor, bluegrass music, and especially visiting flea markets and yard sales. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling, filling his retirement years with trips to the beach and dozens of bus tours all over the U.S. He is survived by what he always referred to as his "wonderful family" including daughter, Dawn Hewitt of Newton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Kathy Hewitt of Hickory, and Sam and Jan Hewitt of Sandy Springs, Ga.; six grandchildren, Cami and Lea Hepler of Hickory, Elizabeth (Ben) McKinnon of Indian Land, S.C., Christopher (Jennigray) Hewitt of Columbia, S.C., Erena Hepler of San Diego, Calif., and Shannon (Josh) Hewitt-Buck of Charleston, S.C.; six great-grandchildren, James Jackson "JJ" Hewitt and Merida Hewitt-Buck, Emma Kate and Asher McKinnon, and Anson and Banner Hewitt; a sister, Rita Stokes of Newton; and a brother, Ken Hewitt of Newton. A service of remembrance will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staffs at Carillon Assisted Living, Abernethy Laurels, and Catawba Regional Hospice for their attentive care during the past several years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658; or to the UCHS Foundation, 102 Leonard Avenue, Newton, NC 28658, for the new healthcare building which Bill was very excited about at Abernethy Laurels; or to Lupus Foundation of America, 2000 L Street NW, Suite 410, Washington, DC 20036.

PHILIP A. HEWITT

NEWTON - Philip Andrew Hewitt, 36, of Newton, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Catawba Valley Medical Center following a more than decade-long battle with lupus.

Born Jan. 16, 1969, in Catawba County, he was a son of Bill Hewitt and the late Dade Aldridge Hewitt.

He graduated with honors from Fred T. Foard High School and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College, where he was a friend to all who knew him. He later proudly served in the U.S. Navy.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Chrystal Pearson Hewitt; a stepson, Matthew Phoenix of the home; a sister, Dawn Hewitt of Hickory; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Samuel J. Hewitt of Birmingham, Ala., and Timothy and Kathy Hewitt of Hickory; five nieces, Cami Hepler, Lea Hepler, Erena Hepler and Elizabeth Hewitt, all of Hickory, and Shannon Hewitt of Charleston, S.C.; and a nephew, Christopher Hewitt of Hickory. He is also survived by countless dedicated friends and was loved by all.

A service of remembrance will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Burke Mortuary in Newton.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burke Mortuary in Newton and at other times at the home of Bill Hewitt, 2139 Bethany Church Road, Newton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, P.O. Box 631047, Baltimore, Md. 21263-1047.
