Lettie M. Chilcott

DURHAM - Lettie Mae Chilcott, 100, formerly of Hickory, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, in Durham. Born April 13, 1908, in Hughes, she was one of 13 children of the late Henry and Jane Webb Hollander.

Mae was a licensed practical nurse and had a long professional career providing care to many in the Hickory community at Hickory Memorial Hospital, various nursing homes and as a private-duty nurse. She finally retired in her 80s in order to care for her terminally-ill sister, Katherine, also of Hickory. She became a daily presence at the Senior Citizens Center in Long View, regularly serving lunch. Mae moved to Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Hickory in 2002. She resided there three years before moving to Spring Arbor in Durham in 2005 to be closer to her grandchildren.

Mae loved the North Carolina mountains and the bluegrass music of the region. Some of her fondest memories were of times spent at the famed Singing on the Mountain at Grandfather Mountain and family reunions at the Hollander homestead in Roseboro.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her only child, Herman Cloyd Hollander and his wife, Hazel Shoemake Hollander, eight sisters; and three brothers. Her surviving sister is Dovie Plaster of Bowie, Md. Also surviving are four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Those family members are Jane Falls (Sam) of Kannapolis and sons, Spencer Ray and Caleb Hollander Falls; Mark Hollander (Kellie) of Burlington and children, John Michael, Ellen Elise and Robert Alan Hollander; Steve Hollander (Robin) of Raleigh and daughter, Crystal Hollander Rose (Justin) and granddaughter, Lilah Mae Rose; and Mike Hollander (Jennifer) of Durham and children, Bryan Scott, Katherine Lee and Chesley Paige Hollander. She is also fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. The family expresses their gratitude for the patience and care provided by the staffs at Spring Arbor of Hickory and Spring Arbor of Durham over the last six years.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Newland is in charge of arrangements. There will be visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, followed by a brief graveside service at the family cemetery in Roseboro. The family suggests donations to the American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers.
