Hillsboro -- Melvin LaMar Coffey, 76, of Hillsboro, formerly of Witt, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hillsboro Hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bass Funeral Home here with burial in Witt Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Julia; two sons, John of Santa Maria, Calif. and Richard of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia McCollom of Hillsboro; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Mendel of Newport News, Va. and Kenneth of Warner Robbins, Ga.

Melvin Lamar Coffey and Julia Laverne Walcher were married on 23 June 1934 in Witt, Montgomery Co., IL. Julia Laverne Walcher was born on 8 February 1904. Julia died in Illinois on 21 January 1997 and was buried at Witt Cemetery in Witt City, Montgomery Co., IL in January 1997 .23583

John F. Coffey, 82, of Santa Maria, CA passed away in his home surrounded by his loved ones on July 14th, 2017. John was a Communication Specialist for the US Air Force for 22 years. He earned his bachelor's degree from LaVerne University and graduated magna cum laude with his degree in Business. After his retirement from the US Air Force, he worked at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Aerospace as a Training Engineer for 35 years where he earned several gold medallion awards.

John loved to run, swim, paint pumpkins, and relax at their cabin at Lake Nacimiento and later at Pine Mountain Club. He also enjoyed family gatherings and having fun with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was very proud of his family.

John married his bride, Shirley Coffey, 63 years ago in Hillsboro, Illinois. While serving in the US Air Force, he was stationed in Iceland, Illinois, Mississippi, Morocco, Spain, and Japan. He later retired at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California in 1975. They then purchased their home in Santa Maria, California where they resided.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Coffey of 63 years. He is also survived by his brother Richard Coffey of Texas, his sister Virginia McCollom and husband, Mac, of Missouri and several nieces and nephews. His eldest daughter, Susan Coffey. His son John B. Coffey, wife Londa and two children, Michael and Sherice. Michael's wife Adrienne and their daughter Payden. His daughter, Debbie Sharer and her husband Russ and their children Samantha Castillo and Brandon McCool. Samantha's husband Jason and their 4 children, Joseph, Lillian, Gracie and Brayden. Brandon's wife, Sarah and their two children Isaac and Evelyn. His daughter Lisa Frederick and her son Justin.

A memorial celebration for John will be held at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary this Saturday, July 22nd, 2017 at 10am. Followed by military service at the Santa Maria Cemetery.
