James W. "Jim" Coffey, an Army first sergeant in the 314th Infantry/79th Division, served in Europe during World War II.

He later worked in data processing at Friedrich Refrigeration for five years and from 1982 to 1987 was registrar at the National Education Center.

Coffey, 75, died in a hospital Monday of complications from an auto accident Sept. 22. He was hospitalized all but 12 days since then.

Born in Campbell County, Tenn., he was the third of six boys. His father was an electrician in the mines.

After graduating from Westbourn High School, he worked his way through a Knoxville, Tenn., business college by working evenings at a hamburger stand.

After his military service, Coffey met his future wife while both worked in the Fisher Body Division of General Motors Corp. in Hamilton, Ohio. He started in production control and moved to data processing.

In 1949, he and Carol Nancy Clingman were married in Hamilton.

They moved to Pittsburgh in 1967 and he worked for RCA two years before moving to Atlanta and working for Remington Rand. They moved to San Antonio in 1971 and he worked for Friedrich Refrigeration.

"At National Education Center as registrar, Jim had good rapport with students at the technical school until retiring," his wife said. "He was a very quiet, unassuming man who was honest and gracious.

"He was very proud of serving his country, and proud all of his brothers served. Everybody loved him. He recently wrote reflections on his life, which were extremely incisive.

"Last July we served as hosts for the 47th anniversary of his World War II 314th Infantry held in the Menger Hotel. This was a great experience for him."

Coffey enjoyed playing golf until he hurt his back. For the last several years he devoted himself to gardening. He had 23 hanging baskets of bougainvillea in all colors visible from the living room and dining area.

Survivors include a son, Paul Boell of Vancouver, Wash.; five brothers, George Coffey of Houston, Edward Coffey of Smyrna, Tenn., Charles Coffey of Vallejo, Calif., Robert Coffey of Minneapolis and Bill Coffey of Jacksboro, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
