Jemima Hayes and James Giles were married on 9 December 1797 in Amherst Co., VA.1106 James Giles1107, son of William Giles and Margaret , was born in 1775 in Amherst Co., VA.

[James Giles] Born year 1775, Amherst Co., Va. son of Wm. and Margaret Giles. Died between yrs. 1850-60, Nelson Co., Va. First record found for him (other than family records) was Amherst County tax record, year 1793, which gives his father, Wm. as guardian. Year 1798 James is listed separate from his father, being 21 years of age or over. The U.S. census record, yr. 1850, Nelson Co., gives his age as 75. He married first Jimimah T. Coffey, Dec. 19, 1797, (bond), Amherst Co. Consent of Thos. and Winneyford Hays, (Winneyford was a Coffey), Richard Taliaferro, surety. Certificate of marriage, Rev. Wm. Crawford. James married second Nancy Saunders. (This marriage is recorded in the family Bible of James' son Richard, now in the possession of his decendants [sic], but does not give year. Several of the old family records gave the early family names but did not include dates). Nancy is given on the U.S. c.r. yr. 1830 Nelson Co., as being between 30 & 40 yrs. of age. She was dec'd prior to the U. S. c.r. of yr. 1850. The tax records for Amherst County, year, 1807, shows James with 1 tithe, 2 slaves and 2 horses. Nelson County was taken from Amherst the same year, but the Nelson County tax records for the year 1809 is negative for James. Year 1810 he is listed with 1 title and 2 horses. Year 1815 with 2 slaves etc. His taxes appear each year from 1810 through 1850, latest date examined. The following U. S. Census records for Nelson County show more children in the household of James Giles than are given in the family Bible records of James' sons, and it is presumed that several of his children died young, unless Nancy Saunders was a widow with children when she married James. U.S. Census record year 1820 lists James GILES, age over 45, wife, 26 to 45, Ch: males - three, to 10 years, two, 10 to 16 years, one, 16 to 18, and one, 16 to 26; females - one, to 10 years, two, 16 to 26. U.S. c.r. for Nelson Co., year 1830, gives James Giles age 50 to 60; his wife 30 to 40; ch, males - one, 5 to 10, one, 10 to 15, one, 15 to 20; females - one, 15 to 20. U.S. c.r. for the Co. year 1850 records James age as 75, farmer; Mahala Giles age 42, Nathaniel Giles age 6. The U.S. c.r. for Nelson Co. year 1860 is negative for James. the identity of Mahala and Nathaniel Giles was not established.
