MOCKSVILLE – Mr. Claude Burl Philyaw, 90, of Chinquapin Road died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at his home. He was born Nov. 28, 1920, in Mecklenburg County, VA to the late James Milton and Sarah Jane Coffey Philyaw.

Mr. Philyaw was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force and was retired from Roadway Express. He was very proud of being a B-29 crew member during World War II where he was stationed at Saipan. Mr. Philyaw was also a member of Salem Lodge A.F. & A.M. 289 in Winston-Salem.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pansy Pritchard; five brothers, Lloyd, Collis, Arthur, Lewis and Frank Philyaw; and a son-in-law, Ralph Aiken, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruth Blanch Phillips Philyaw of the home; four children, Claudia Elaine Philyaw Aiken of East Wenatchee, WA, Donald Burl Philyaw (Karen Holstein) of Greenville, Sarah Philyaw Beeker (Kenneth) of Cleveland and Kathy Philyaw Hefner (James) of Mocksville; six grandchildren, Brent Philyaw, David Philyaw, Susan Aiken Spencer, Ralph Aiken, III, Rachel Aiken Bren and Jacob Hefner; and eight great-grandchildren, Chris, Mason, Logan, Jackson and Ashley Philyaw and Parker, Piper and Phinneus Aiken.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 27, at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Dr. Darrell Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Lenoir with the Rev. Jeff Hoyle officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign War Memorial Honor Guard.
