Demarest Eugene Coffey, 86, of Lynchburg, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at The Summit, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Mary Ann Shelton Coffey for 57 years.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on July 24, 1928, he was the son of the late Robert and Carolena Coffey.

Demarest served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from the Lynchburg Foundry after over 30 years of service and worked in the metal pattern shop. He also was a machine shop instructor at CVCC. Demarest was active in the American Legion, VFW, and Elon Ruritan. Demarest was a member of The First Baptist Church of Monroe where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He had a strong faith in the Lord and that passion and drive to serve God was seen in him daily by everyone who met Demarest. He truly did walk as God would have us walk. After retirement, he enjoyed woodcarving and he was a wonderful, caring, and loving husband, dad, and granddad.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Pamela C. Thomas and husband James; son, Robert Coffey and wife Laurel; two grandchildren, William Coffey and Christina Thomas; two sisters, Joyce Mason and husband Calvin and Sandra Hughes; and nephews, Kenny Hughes, Kevin Hughes, and Rev. David Mason.The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at The Summit for their compassion and wonderful care during Demarest’s illness.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, July 17, 2015 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Rev. Glynn Coleman, Rev. David Mason, and Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow at Briarwood Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Post 16.
