Obituary, The Newton Daily News, Newton, Jasper Co., IA, Thu., Apr. 17, 2008

Daniel Edward Coffey Sr., 80, went home to be with his Savior on April 14, 2008, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Dan was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Hamburg. After graduating from Hamburg High School in 1945, Dan served in the U.S. Navy in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. While serving in the U.S. Navy, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Lamphere, in Seattle, Wash., and they were married on Dec. 24, 1948. Dan then attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Mo., before being recalled to the service; he was discharged in 1952.

Dan and Dorothy made their home in Newton. Dan was employed by the Maytag Company as a systems designer for 37 years, retiring in December of 1989. Dan was an active member of the First Christian Church, where he served in numerous capacities. He also was a member of the Newton Community Theatre, Maytag Speech Club and Management Club. Dan's true loves were his wife, his family, his relationship with the Lord, acting in plays and music. He loved to travel, read, play bridge, correct his loved one's grammar (all in jest), write stories, play tennis, golf, run, bike, water ski, sing and play instruments, watch any kind of sports on TV and spend time with his family. He enjoyed getting together with friends and will always be remembered for his dry wit, storytelling and love for others. Dan is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three children, Dan Jr. (Pam) Coffey of Gainesville, Fla., Lori (Bill) Bates of Des Moines and Lynn (Dave) Bennink of Runnells; his seven grandchildren, Jake (Jennifer) Bates, Matthew (Tiffany) Bates, Kyrna (Tom) Erdman, Kristen Bennink, Michelle Bennink, Lauren Coffey and Abigail Coffey; five great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Noah, Anthony, Calla and Veronica Bates; his three nephews, Kyle, Keevin and Earl Koch and their families; several cousins; and many dear life long friends, especially Bob and Jeanne Faust and their children, David, Lori and Jon.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, James Herbert and Inez Mary (Lang) Coffey; his granddaughter, Amy Autumn Bates; and his sister, Helen Koch Loehr.

Memorials may be left to the First Christian Church music or children's ministries, or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or to the Newton Community Theatre. Memorials may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton or at the church on the morning of the service. Dan's family would like to express a very special thank you and with heart felt gratitude to Dr. Mark Westberg and his nurse, Jan, for their remarkable care and support over the last eleven years, as well as to their church family for their incredible love for Dan.

A Celebration of Dan's life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church, 314 E. Second St. N. in Newton. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery.

A living couple was married in 1948 in Seattle, King Co., WA. Living was born in 1932.
