Virgil Joseph Townsend, age 83, of Virgil Lane, Lenoir, died Monday, June 18, 2012 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He was born March 6, 1929 in Wise County, Virginia to the late Joseph Aaron and Rosie Coffey Townsend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Etta Frazier Townsend; daughter, Thelma Coffey; brothers, Lewis Townsend, Jack Townsend and Jessie Townsend; sisters, Polly Coffey, Dora Bowens, Neddie Ford and Nell Bowens.

Mr. Townsend retired from the Lumber Yard at Caldwell Furniture and was a member of Green Rock Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, Rocky Townsend, Henry Townsend, Monroe Townsend, Mike Townsend, James Townsend, Marshall Townsend and Carson Townsend, all of Lenoir; daughters, Omie Adams and Lesia Spears, both of Lenoir, Polly Robinson of Newton and Unie Jones of Granite Falls; two brothers, Bill Townsend and Wheller Townsend, both of Virginia; 28 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Benny Hendrix and Rev. David Woods. Interment will follow at Townsend Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Townsend’s grandsons.

Virgil Joseph Townsend and Mary Etta Frazier were married. Mary Etta Frazier, daughter of Haburn Frazier and Lucy Bowen, was born on 14 May 1925 in Virginia. Mary died at Caldwell County Hospice in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC on 28 March 2004 and was buried at the Townsend Family Cemetery in Globe Twp., Caldwell Co., NC on 31 March 2004 .

Mary Etta Frazier Townsend, 78, of Virgil Lane, Lenoir, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Caldwell County Hospice.

She was born May 14, 1925 to the late Haburn and Lucy Bowen Frazier. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Thelma Ruth Coffey; a grandson, Travis Staton; a brother, James Frazier and two sisters, Iva McNew and Una Stanley.

Mrs. Townsend was a homemaker and a member of Green Rock Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil Townsend of the home; seven sons, Rocky Townsend, Henry Townsend, Monroe Townsend, Mike Townsend, James Townsend, Marshall Townsend and Carson Townsend all of Lenoir; four daughters, Mrs. Omie Adams and Mrs. Lesia Spears both of Lenoir, Mrs. Polly Robinson of Newton and Mrs. Unie Jones of Granite Falls; a brother, Ray Frazier of Virginia; a sister, Mrs. Wilma Jean Townsend of Virginia; 28 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Green Rock Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Hendrix, Rev. David Woods and Rev. Joby Borders. Interment will follow at Townsend Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Joey Townsend, Dale Townsend, Eric Adams, Tyler Townsend, Chad Townsend and James Howard Townsend, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be: George Townsend, Kevin Townsend and Sam Townsend.
