Hugh Salmon Coffey was born in August 1867 in Clarke Co., IA. He lived with his parents in Knox Twp., Clarke Co., IA on 11 January 1900. He lived with his widowed mother in Clarke Co., IA on 8 January 1920.

The 1900 Elm Twp., Allen Co., KS census of 1 Jun. 1900, contains an entry for the family of a Hugh Coffey, born Aug., 1867 in IN (father born KY, mother born IN), with children: Agnes, born Nov. 1889; Russell, born Aug., 1893; Ellis, born Jun., 1896; and Elizabeth Fesler, mother-in-law.

Hugh appears again in Geneva Twp., Allen Co., KS census on 23 May 1910. In this census Hugh was a widower, age 43, born IN, parents born IN. With him are two children: Reuben C., age 16, and Ellis, age 12. Both children were born in Kansas.

These two entries appear to be for Granville's Hugh. Eleven days had elapsed between the 1900 census in Elm Twp., Allen Co., and the one in Clarke Co., Knox Twp., providing adequate time for Hugh to make the trip in time to be enumerated again, this time in the household with his parents.
