Rev. Dr. Hoyle L. Whiteside, Sr. STATESVILLE -- Rev. Dr. Hoyle Lee Whiteside, Sr. died Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fl. Hoyle was born June 25, 1926 in Lincolnton, NC, son of the late Arnold Sr. and Ethel Bumgardner Whiteside. He graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1944.

In June 1947, he graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1950, at the age of 23, he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC and later a Masters of Divinity degree. He did graduate work at the universities of South Carolina, Rutgers and Yale. In 1959, he earned a Masters of Sacred Theology degree from Southern Seminary; and in 1968, he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Elon College.

Dr. Whiteside was a parish pastor for 39 years serving churches in Hickory, Gastonia, Burlington and Statesville. In 1994, he was named Pastor Emeritus at St. John's Lutheran Church (ELCA), Statesville. Dr. Whiteside has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC and a member of the Board of Trustees of Lenoir-Rhyne College.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Arnold Whiteside Jr. and a sister Lois Hoyle.

On June 28, 1950, he married the former Anne Coffey of Granite Falls. He is survived by his wife of 61 and 1/2 years; daughter, Susan Martin and son-in-law, Joe; son, Hoyle Lee Whiteside Jr. and daughter-in-law, Iris; one grandchild, Hoyle Lee Whiteside III (Trey); brother, Harold Whiteside and wife, Lola; brother, Keith Whiteside and wife Judy; sister, Garnell Williams, and husband, Carl.

The Service of Celebration for his life will be Saturday, December 31, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church (ELCA), 629 8th Street NE, Hickory, NC 28601. Pastor Richard Fritz, NC Synod Bishop Leonard Bolick and the Rev. Carroll Robinson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Hoyle to Lenoir-Rhyne University (P.O. Box 7467, Hickory, NC 28601) or St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.nicholsonfunerals.com.
