Driver of GI Vehicle Is Drowned

Wuerzburg, Germany (AP) - A Kentucky soldier drowned Tuesday when the amphibious armored vehicle he was operating across the Main River sank, the U.S. Army announced Wednesday.

S.Sgt Elwood Coffey, 28, of Monticello, Ky., was pronounced dead on arrival at an Army hospital after being removed from the armored personnel carrier.

Coffey was participating in field maneuvers at the Wildflecken training area, the Army said.

He is survived by his widow, Lidia Ann, and three sons and a daughter - all residing near Wildflecken. Other survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hardin Coffey of Route 2, Monticello.

Coffey was assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division in Wuerzburg.

The Army said it had not yet determined what caused the vehicle to sink and is investigating.

SSgt Elwood Coffey and Lydia Ann Beaty were married on 29 July 1961. Lydia Ann Beaty was born on 14 May 1944 in Monticello, Wayne Co., KY. Lydia died in Bowling Green, Warren Co., KY on 6 November 2004 and was buried at Elk Spring Cemetery in Monticello, Wayne Co., KY in November 2004 .47712,47713
