Verless died at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care in Mattoon, Coles Co., IL on 19 January 2013 and was buried at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Mattoon, Coles Co., IL on 25 January 2013 .46624,46625 MATTOON - Verless Robert Coffey Jr., 92, of Mattoon, passed away at 12:10 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013, in RestHaven Memorial Gardens, Mattoon. Pastor Parker Booth will officiate. Military Funeral Honors will be performed by Mattoon VFW Post #4325 and the Illinois National Guard. There will be no visitation. The family has entrusted Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, with arrangements.

Verless was born on September 14, 1920 in Mattoon, Illinois, the son of Verless Robert Sr., and Alpha (Perry) Coffey. He married Willa Mae Roberson on February 2, 1946 in Mattoon, Illinois. She passed away on May 22, 1993.

Surviving are three sons: Charles Robert Coffey, and his wife Donna, of Mattoon, Illinois; John Riley Coffey of Loveland, Colorado; and Roger Dale Coffey, and his wife Jan, of Bolingbrook, Illinois; Eight grandchildren: Robert Coffey, and his wife Marcia, of Mattoon, Illinois; Chris Coffey, and his wife Angie, of Bushton, Illinois; Brad Coffey; Melissa Rardin, and her husband Bill; Greg Coffey, and his wife Sarah; all of Mattoon, Illinois; Alpha Peterson, and her husband Chris; Miranda Coffey; and Zena Coffey; all of Bolingbrook, Illinois; one "granddaughter", Montana Ikemire of Colorado; 13 Great-grandchildren; and one sister, Wilma Tucker of Wildwood, Florida.

In addition to his loving wife, Willa, Verless was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Wanda Schlaiss and Harriett Coffey; two brothers: Gerald and Clayton Coffey; and one granddaughter-in-law, Jill Coffey.

Mr. Coffey was a veteran of World War II. He served his country proudly in the United Stated Navy from January of 1942 until November of 1945, as 1st Class Petty Officer. Most of his time serving was spent in the South Pacific. He then spent four years in the reserves. Verless was employed at Illinois Consolidated Telephone Company for 11 ½ years, before finally retiring from Columbia Machine in Mattoon after 20 years. He was a life member of the Mattoon VFW Post #4325, and was an active in Boy Scout leadership from 1958 through 1966. Verless attended First Baptist Church in Mattoon. He was a 1941 graduate of Mattoon High School.
