Clayton Blaine Coffey Oct. 17, 1930 - Aug. 2, 2017 Our loving father and grandfather Clayton passed peacefully in his home with family near. Clayton was known all his life for his humor, his storytelling and his penchant for song, often singing to his wife of over 65 years. Clayton and Hazel met in high school on a blind date, married in 1950, and remained together until Hazel's passing just over a year ago. The couple was gifted at having daughters and raised four while Clayton climbed the ranks of the Portland Police Department from patrol officer to lieutenant. His job gave him much fodder for stories, like the time he helped deliver a newborn baby, apprehended a nervous bank robber, or was reprimanded for not issuing enough traffic tickets. Clayton's own birth was a story in itself. He came into the world in Payette, Idaho Oct. 17, 1930, the last of Guy and Verna Coffey's 15 children. It was the beginning of the Great Depression and food was so scarce, it was a regular joke to "slice that butter like you're trying to miss it!" Clayton had a close bond with his brothers. They teamed up to build each other's homes and enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips together. But his greatest legacy is his love and devotion to his family. Just ask his grandchildren, who thrived on hours of endless attention, watching 'Papa' cook breakfasts where bacon was a must, steering his truck, building bird houses, or taking a break for a fudgesicle or push pop "push-em-up." Clayton is survived by his four daughters, Karen Potts, Sally Coffey (John Roberts), Marcia (Ed) Turnquist and Linda (Pete) Stone; his grandchildren, Chris (Beth) Potts, Olivia and Anna Stone and Macklin and Amelia Turnquist; and his great-grandchildren Emily and Hannah Potts. In the hereafter, he joins Hazel and Judy, the daughter they lost at a young age; son-in-law, Craig Potts; and all 14 of Clayton's siblings.
