The Hillsboro Journal on January 2, 1906:

Shot His Twin Brother.

The village of Irving was shocked Friday afternoon, when the news spread that Roy Coffey had shot and killed his twin brother, Robert.

W. A. Sallee of Litchfield was in the city and had employed Robert to distribute bills for him paying him in advance for the work. Roy offered to assist if Robert would divide the money. The proposition was accepted, and the boys started to do the work. Everything went along smoothly till they reached the north part of the village where they met George McHugh, a twelve year old boy, with a .22 target rifle. The boys stopped and began to play. The McHigh boy laid the gun on the ground beside the road and told the other boys that it was loaded, and warned them not to touch it.

After playing awhile Robert started to finish the distribution of the bills. Roy was not ready and ordered his brother to lay down the bills. Robert was determined to go and then Roy picked up the gun and threatened to shoot him if he did not throw them down. Robert refused and Roy pulled up and snapped the gun at him. To his surprise, it went off and the ball hit his brother square in the forehead. He cried out "Oh" and fell. The McHugh boy ran to him and picked him up. The cry of the boys brought to the scene Thomas Coffey and Toney Ludewick. This was about 1:30 in the afternoon. They took the wounded boy to Dr. Fullerton's office as fast as they could, but nothing could be done and in a short time he was dead. The above facts were brought out at the inquest held in the evening. Roy admitted that he did the shooting but says he did not think the gun would go off.

The boys who were 9 years old on the 10th of September are sons of Cyrus Coffey and they were both bright boys. There was a cloud of sadness spread over the village which has not yet entirely vanished. This should be a warning to boys not to fool with a gun. While it was gross neglect the law does not recognize criminal intent in a person under ten.

The funeral, conducted by Rev. McKay, was held from the M.E. Church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
