Obituary, The Knoxville News-Sentinel, Knoxville, TN, Fri., Sep. 23, 2011

HARRELL, WILLIAM CARSON age 95, of Halls, died September 21, 2011 at Ben Atchely State Veterans Home.

Born in Claiborne County, he was the eldest child of Charley and Thula (Coffey) Harell. Carson was proud of his service in the U.S. Army during World War II. As a member of the 27th. Division, he saw action in the Pacific Theater in the battles for Saipan and Okinawa. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for injuries he sustained in combat. Shortly after his military discharge, he met the love of his life, Eva Neely, whom he married in 1948. The were married 43 years before her death in 1991.

He was employed by R.&L. Brake and Supply Co. as the shop foreman for 33 years. After retiring, he was a founding member of the East Tennessee Veterans' Honor Guard, and proudly volunteered for many years helping provide military funerals for veterans. He was also active in the DAV.

Carson felt that helping others in whatever way he could was a privilege and a responsibility. Whether participating in military funerals to honor veterans, or sharing vegetables from his garden, he put his faith into action. He was a longtime member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where he was in the Sanctuary Sunday School class and the Eager Beavers senior citizens. He was a man of integrity and compassion who will be dearly missed.

He is survived by daughter, Barbara T. Harrell; son, Charles S. (Buddy) Harrell; special nephew, Terry Lynn Harrell and wife Helen; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many friends.

The family would like to express sincere thanks for the help provided by caregivers who assisted in his care at home. In addition, we are very grateful for compassion and care given by the staff of D-Wing at Ben Atchley Veterans Home.

The family will receive friends Friday, September 23, 2011 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Mynatt Funeral Home Fountain City Chapel with funeral service to follow conducted by Dr. Alan Price.
