3979. Dr. Albion McDowell "Mack" Coffey12865 was born on 6 October 1874 in Missouri. He lived with his parents in Platte City, Carroll Twp., Platte Co., MO on 1 June 1880. Albion enlisted in Kansas on 28 July 1899 in the US Army and was assigned to the 33d Infantry hospital at San Antonie at Kansas.12866

Col. Hare yesterday issued an order assigning Albion McD Coffey as hospital steward for the regiment. Steward Coffey enlisted at Kansas City and reported for duty Sunday. He is a competent man for the position, and Maj. Lieberman is pleased to have him with him.

The Official Army Register for 1910, dated Sat., Jan. 1, 1910, Page 61 lists Coffey, Albion M., First Lt., 7 Jul. 1908, hospital steward, 33 US Inf on 28 Jul, 1899, honorably discharged 12 Mar 1900.

Albion was with the 3d Regiment, US Volunteers in Luzon, Phillipine Islands on 6 June 1900. Dr. Coffey arrived at Fort Davis in Nome, Alaska on 31 July 1905 and was a contract surgeon at the post.12867,12868,12869

Contract Surgeon Albion McD Coffey has been relieved from duty at Fort Worder, Washington, and ordered to Fort Davis, Alaska, relieving Contract Surgeon Harper Peddicord, who is ordered to Seattle, Washington for further orders. Dr. Coffey was relieved of duty in Vancouver, Clark Co., WA on 7 January 1908 and ordered to Fort Sam Houston for duty.12870

Oregonian News Bureau, Washington, Jan. 6. - Contract Surgeon Albion Coffey is relieved from duty at Vancouver Barracks and will proceed to Fort Same Houston for duty. He lived with his mother in Platte City, Carroll Twp., Platte Co., MO on 26 April 1910. Dr. Coffey received orders to move from Washington, D.C. to the Philippines for duty. He was ordered back to the US in Aug., 1914.12871

Orders for Philippines.

Orders have been issued at the War Department assigning officers of the Medical Corps to duty in the Philippine Islands for the relief of other officers of the same corps who are ordered to the United States for assignment to duty. Those ordered to the Philippines and their present stations are:

Albion McD Coffey from Fort St. Philip, La. Dr. Coffey served overseas with the military between 12 June 1917 and 24 June 1919.12872

Capt. Grundy C. Coffey and Maj. Mack Coffey have returned from overseas and are at home with their mother, Mrs. McD. Coffey, in Independence. He was ordered to receuiting duty in Philadelphia on 14 April 1927.12873

Capt. Albion McD. Coffey, U. S. A. retired, of 4123 Fourteenth street, this city, has been ordered to Philadelphia for recruiting duty in the Third Corps Area. He appeared in the census on 15 April 1940 in Wild Wood City, Cape May Co., New Jersey.12874 Albion died in New Jersey in 1954 and was buried at Pennsylvania in 1954. His burial site is not known to me.12875
Dr. Coffey was involved with the US Army from at least 1905. The first record I have found for him was dated July 31, 1905 when he arrived for duty as post surgeon, per par. 6, special orders #113 dated Jul. (?) 8, 1905. He was listed on the US Returns from Military Posts, 1806-1916 as a "contract surgeon." Fort Davis Alaska through Dec., 1906.

In Nov., 1907 he was at Vancouver Barracks in Washington Territory and, in Jan. 1908 he returned to Fort Davis. In Jan., 1908 he was at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX through Jan., 1909. In Jun., 1910 he was at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans La. where he remained through Dec., 1910. In Feb., 1910 he returned to Fort Sam. He left there to report to Fort St. Philip, LA and remained at that location through Dec., 1910. In Jan., 1911 he was back at Jackson Barracks where he remained until Dec., 1911. He was at Fort St. Philip again from Jan., 1911 through Dec., 1911.

In Feb., 1912 he was found serving in the Philippines at Camp Ward Cheney, Caviet, Philippine Islands. He remained in the Islands through at least 1914. Albion also served at Fort Lawton, Washington, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and at Fort Crook, Nebraska.

Dr. Albion McDowell "Mack" Coffey and Dorothy J. were married circa 1914. They appeared in the census on 4 April 1930 in Philadelphia city, PA.12876 Dorothy J. was born circa 1886 in Tennessee.
