Former Sheriff of Collin County Dies

McKinney, June 23. - W. S. Coffey, 80, former Collin County Sheriff and Confederate veteran, died this morning. His brother, Z. T. Coffey, was buried here yesterday.

William Stanley Coffey was born in Kentucky on July 9, 1842. He came to Texas with his father and family in 1855 and settled east of Allen. There he married Eliza Lucas, sister of Colonel Gabe Lucas. He served in the Confederate Army for four years and was wounded three times. In 1896 he was elected sheriff of Collin County, which office he held until 1899. In June, 1922, he and two of his brothers, Z. T. of the Wetsel community, and Mint W. of Lone Grove, Oklahoma, died within a period of seventy-two hours. Three of his children preceded him in death. Those surviving were: Dr. J. C., R. H., Sales, Mrs. W. D. Goode, Mrs. W. S. Ledbetter, Mrs. S. E. Walker, and Homer L. The last two were living in McKinney in 1957.
