Coffey Family Reunion Names New President

McKinney, Texas, July 25, - Sterling P. Coffey, pioneer McKinney businessman and one of the two living children of Salathial Coffey and wife, early-day residents of this county, has been named president of the annual Coffey family reunion, whose fourteenth get-together was held at Finch Park in this city.

Miss Hallie Coffey, daughter of the newly elected president, was named secretary. Mr. Coffey succeeds Cecil Richards of Allen to the presidency, Mr. Richards being a great-grandson of Salathial Coffey.

An earlier news item dated Sep. 13, 1928 in the Dallas Morning News reported that the family had held a reunion in McKinney. Three surviving children attended: Mrs. Nancy Jane Leggett of Vasti; Mrs. Margaret Kerby of McKinney and S. P. Coffey of McKinney. Eldest present was Bent Whisenant of Allen, the 85 years old son-in-law of Sales. Sterling died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 21 September 1944 at the age of 82 at home in McKinney, Collin Co., TX and was buried at Fitzhugh Cemetery in Forest Grove, Collin Co., TX on 28 September 1944.10060,10061

Sterling P. Coffey, son of Salathial and Mary A. Coffey, was born two miles east of Allen on June 6, 1862. On June 27, 1886, he married Ida Elizabeth Roundtree. Both lived to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary of July 31, 1936. They were the parents of five children: Laurin, Fred S., Dudley Otto, Mrs. Frank Lockhart and Mary Frances, who died in infancy. For several years Sterling Coffey was a successful farmer. Later he moved to McKinney where he operated a livery stable. His death occurred on September 21, 1944.

McKinney Couple Feted on Wedding Anniversary

McKinney, Texas, July 31, - Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Coffey celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary of [sic] July 21 informally Sunday. All of their children were home for the occasion as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Laurin Coffey of Bryan, Miss Hallie Coffey, who lives with her parents; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Coffey and twin daughters, Dorothy and Doris of McKinney.

Mr. and Mrs. Coffey were married in this county at Willow Springs, now known as the Lucas Community. The ceremony was said in the home of the bride's parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. V. Rountree. Mr. Coffey was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sayles Coffey, early pioneers of this county. Dudley Otto "Otto" Coffey was born on 27 October 1887 in Texas. Dudley Otto enlisted in the US Army on on 9 May 1917 at in Fort Leavenworth, KS. He was discharged on 22 January 1919 10069 Dudley died of toxic exhaustion psychosis on 27 May 1929 at the age of 41 in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX and was buried at Fitzhugh Cemetery in Forest Grove, Collin Co., TX on 28 May 1929.10070,10071,10072

McKinney, Texas, May 27--Donald Otto Coffey, 48, of McKinney, who died in Dallas, was buried in Fitzhugh Cemetery at Forest Grove. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Coffey; one brother, Fred Coffey, and one sister, Miss Hallie Coffey, all of this city, and a brother, Laurin Coffey of Houston.

[His death certificate reports that he was a druggist and single at the time of death.]
