Mattie Elizabeth Demastus, 83, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed peacefully to her eternal home and to be with her Lord after a courageous fight with cancer at 10:10 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010, at her residence with her family by her side.

She was born on July 7, 1926, in Love, Virginia, the daughter of the late B. Frank and Lottie Campbell Hatter.

Mrs. Demastus was a member of Mountain View Mennonite Church for over 70 years and retired from American Safety Razor with over 28 years of service.

She enjoyed working in her garden, sewing and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Austin Demastus, on October 6, 2005; three brothers, Winfred Hatter, Hunter Hatter, Reginald Hatter; a sister, Ruth Wolfe; and a grandson, Bradley Scott Demastus.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry W. Demastus of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, Gary Demastus of Lyndhurst; a daughter, Brenda Demastus Yingling and her husband, David, of Waynesboro; a brother, Warren A. Hatter and his wife, Louise, of Lyndhurst; five grandchildren, Melanie Demastus Miller and her husband, Scott, Derek Demastus and his wife, Loni, Laura Demastus, Christopher and his wife, Megan Sweet Demastus, Nathan Yingling; three great-grandchildren, daughters of Christopher and Megan, Lilly Demastus, Caden Demastus, Karsen Demastus; sister-in-law, Susie Bridge and her husband, Clinton, of Lyndhurst; a sister-in-law, Jean Cook Hatter of Lyndhurst; a brother-in-law, William Demastus and his wife, Doris of Lyndhurst; a special cousin, Chester Campbell and his wife Hazel, of Lyndhurst,

She also leaves a number of close friends she made during her employment at American Safety Razor.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at Mountain View Mennonite Church by Pastor Earl Monroe. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be her grandchildren and special nephew, Neil Bridge.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nieces, nephews, Violet Byran, Easter Pitzer, Beulah Cline, Carolyn Dameron and Blanch Cash.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday, January 11, 2010, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
