Suicide Effort Fatal To Girl

Vera Caroline Coffey of Caldwell County Develops Pneumonia and Dies

Lenoir, Sept. 27.--Seventeen-year-old Vera Carolina Coffey's attempt at suicide caused her death today.

Saturday night she drank part of the contents of a bottle of poison and at first responded to treatment here. Pneumonia developed, causing her death shortly after midnight last night. She drank the poison after a disagreement with her family, Sheriff J. C. Tolbert reported.

During one of the brief periods of consciousness, the girl told members of her family that she was sorry for the deed.

Funeral services were held at Hudson today. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Coffey; a sister, Eula Coffey, and two brothers, Davis and Lewis Coffey, all of whom live in Mulberry, deep in the Caldwell mountains.
